> Golden Couples: Darren and Libby
by Lucy
Libby and Darren first got together when Darren moved into the street to be with his mother after being released from prison. Against the will of her father Karl, who didn't like the thought of his daughter being with a convicted criminal, they embarked on a relationship. Because of Karl's objections, they moved in together, not telling anyone where they were. This made Karl realise that they were committed to each other, and he grudgingly gave them his blessing. A few months later however, Darren cheated on Libby with her brother Mal's girlfriend, and despite Darren, proposing, they split up. Darren decided to leave town, but Libby tracked him down, confessed her love for him and they got back together. Darren cheated on Libby again, and this time they split up for good, with Darren leaving Erinsborough soon after.
Although we heard nothing about Darren in the intervening years, but we saw Libby get engaged, get married, have a child and become a widow.
When Darren reappeared in 2004, the chemistry between the two was obvious. Although it took Libby a while to realise Darren wanted him back, and then Darren tried to play it cool, they eventually succumbed to their feelings. Darren appeared to be everything Libby was missing in her life, a partner, a father to Ben, and above all someone who made her very happy.
After a robbery at Scully's building site, Darren was a prime suspect. When Libby doubted him, all but slightly, he couldn't deal with it, and in what was one of the most moving episodes of the year, Darren left, taking the engagement ring he had bought for Libby with him. Libby was obviously distraught by this, but it seemed in time, she had started to forget about him.
Some months later, Darren got back in contact, asking her and Ben to move to Shepparton to be with him, and it confirmed what we all knew, Libby was still in love with him. After an emotional talk with Susan, Libby decided to go, and was given a fantastic send off by all on the street.
When I heard Libby was leaving, and that Darren was coming back, albeit briefly, I wanted only one outcome, for Libby to leave to be with him. Thankfully that has happened. What better way to have one of my favourite characters leave, one that I have grown up with over the last ten years, than to go to be with Darren. I sincerely hope they both return one day.
