Features > The Erinsborough Bubble by Guy

Ramsay Street, Erinsborough, Anson’s Corner and Lassiters all exist within a bubble, a soap bubble, meaning that anyone who has graced the hallowed tarmac of Ramsay Street’s future or past endeavours simply doesn't exist in the real world. This means that there are numerous films, television series and singers who don’t exist to the residents of Ramsay Street - which is probably why they spend some much time at Charlie's and Harold's rather than sitting in front of the TV. Here, we present a (non-exhaustive) list of things that don’t exist (and why) in Neighbours...

AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION

There are many Neighbours actors who've appeared in other Australian television series, meaning that none of these programmes should exist in the Neighbours world:

Home & Away: Amongst others, Craig McLachlan, Guy Pearce, Jane Hall, Bruce Samazan, Terence Donovan, and most recently Kip Gamblin and Rebekah Elmaloglou, have appeared in both Neighbours and Home & Away. Terence Donovan was Rebekah's stepfather in Home & Away, and has now become her father-in-law in Neighbours!

Underbelly: Dieter Brummer, Peter O'Brien, Kevin Harrington, Eliza Szonert and Madeleine West have all appeared in the various incarnations of Underbelly as well as living on Ramsay Street.

Prisoner Cell Block H: Elspeth Ballaytyne, Colette Mann, Janet Andrewartha, Jackie Woodburne, Caroline Gillmer, Alan Hopgood, Ian Smith, Tom Oliver, Stefan Dennis, Shane Connor... and many others moved to Ramsay Street after first appearing in the soap set in Wentworth Prison.

Packed To The Rafters: Brooke Satchwell, Kristian Schmid, Luke Pegler, Jacinta Stapleton and Bernard Curry all appeared in this series.

The Secret Life Of Us: Jonathon Dutton and Benjie McNair both made appearances in this series.

Big Brother Australia: Blair McDonough was a contestant on the show's first series, whilst Carla Bonner was a guest on Celebrity Big Brother.

The Voice Australia: Delta Goodrem and Kylie Minogue have both been coaches on the Australian version of this singing contest.

Australian Idol: Dan O'Connor and Dean Geyer were both contestants, whilst judges Marcia Hines and Ian 'Dicko' Dickson have both made cameo appearances in Neighbours.

UK TELEVISION

A lot of Neighbours actors have also made their way to UK shores:

Emmerdale: Both Anne Charleston and Mark Little have made their way from Ramsay Street to the Yorkshire Dales.

The Bill: Daniel MacPherson played PC Cameron Tait in this series, whilst both Stefan Dennis and Peter O'Brien had guest roles.

Hollyoaks: Both Dan O'Connor and Sarah Vandenbergh have appeared in this soap opera.

Casualty: Peter O'Brien was a regular in this hospital drama as Dr Stitch Lambert, and Stefan Dennis and Mark Little both had guest roles.

Doctors: Lucinda Cowden, Nicola Charles and Scott Major have all appeared in this BBC daytime soap opera.

Doctor Who: Two Neighbours characters - Adam Rhodes and Mark Brennan - have confessed to being big fans of Doctor Who. Which must have been confusing when former Neighbours actress Kylie Minogue popped up in the series' 2007 Christmas special as Astrid Peth.

The Voice UK: Kylie Minogue has served as a coach on this series.

Strictly Come Dancing: Holly Valance and Jason Donovan were both contestants on this series.

I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!: Kimberley Davies and Jason Donovan both went into the jungle.

Celebrity Big Brother UK: Ryan Moloney was a contestant on this series.

US TELEVISION

In recent years, more and more young actors have carved out successful careers in America, after making their start on Neighbours, and this success means that there are many more television shows that really shouldn't exist in Erinsborough:

Adelaide Kane and Caitlin Stasey have both appeared in the series Reign, whilst Ben Lawson has been making guest appearances in shows including Don't Trust The B**** In Apartment 23, Bones and The Exes. Jesse Spencer has been busy over the last decade, starring in House and then Chicago Fire, and Dean Geyer appeared in several episodes of the fourth season of Glee. Holly Valance has had guest roles in CSI, Entourage and Prison Break, Jay Ryan (formerly Jay Bunyan) has appeared in Beauty and the Beast, and Dichen Lachman has had roles in Dollhouse, Being Human and Last Resort.

Stephen Lovatt, Aaron Jakubenko and Brett Tucker all featured in the series Spartacus, whilst David Hoflin has appeared in Touch, Alcatraz and Criminal Minds. Nicky Whelan has had roles in Franklin & Bash and Scrubs, Bernard Curry has featured in both Once Upon A Time and Pretty Little Liars, and Michelle Ang has made guest appearances in Grey's Anatomy and Drop Dead Diva.

And of course, we couldn't forget Alan Dale, who, after playing the late, great Jim Robinson, went on to appear in shows including 24, The OC, The Killing, Lost, Person of Interest, Ugly Betty, The West Wing, JAG, Hot In Cleveland, The X Files, ER and Californication.

FILM

Some former Neighbours actors have gone on to appear on the big screen, giving the Erinsborough residents a few less choices when they're next having a DVD night:

Guy Pearce has appeared in films including Memento, The King's Speech, Hurt Locker, LA Confidential, Iron Man 3 and Prometheus, whilst Radha Mitchell has starred in Phone Booth, Pitch Black, Silent Hill, Man on Fire and Olympus Has Fallen.

Margot Robbie has had roles in The Wolf of Wall Street and About Time, Steve Bastoni appeared in The Matrix Reloaded and Bella Heathcote starred in Dark Shadows.

Other films to have featured Neighbours actors include Rachel Blakely, who appeared in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Natalie Imbruglia, who was part of the cast of Johnny English and Michelle Ang, who starred in Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son.

And once again, we can't forget to mention Alan Dale, who's had roles in Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Crystal Skull, Captain America: Winter Soldier and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

STAGE SHOWS

There are many Neighbours actors who've appeared in other Australian television series, meaning that none of these programmes should exist in the Neighbours world:

Dirty Dancing: Josef Brown, Kym Valentine and Ernie Bourne all appeared in this production.

Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat/Chitty Chitty Bang Bang/The Rocky Horror Show/Priscilla Queen of the Desert: Jason Donovan has starred in all of these shows.

Grease:Craig McLachlan appeared as Danny Zuko in the 1993 West End production of Grease.

And of course, not forgetting every single pantomime produced anywhere in the world since 1986!

MUSIC

The actors behind numerous Neighbours characters have hit the charts all over the world, with varying degrees of success:

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan are probably the most well-known Neighbours stars to go onto musical careers, though others including Natalie Imbruglia, Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Delta Goodrem have enjoyed their fair share of success too. Things even got a little bit confusing when Delta was starring as Nina Tucker in Neighbours, and, as the character embarked on a career as a singer, she was told that she could be the next Kylie!

Other Neighbours actors to have hit the charts, with varying degrees of success, include Craig McLachlan, Bruze Samazan, The Blakeney Twins, Imogen Bailey, Dan Falzon, Sam Clark, Stefan Dennis, Stephanie McIntosh and Holly Valance.

NOT FORGETTING...

If we're taking this to the extreme, which we are, then cast member’s significant others cease to exist too, so no Example, rapper husband of Erin McNaught, or Brian McFadden, ex-partner of Delta Goodrem. And sadly it would also mean that the people of Erinsborough should never have had the pleasure of hearing the name Miley Cyrus, as her ex-fiance is Liam Hemsworth, who had a guest role in Neighbours back in 2007.
