Last week, deaf actor David Grant made a guest appearance on UK screens as Coby Phelps, who bought Callum's dog Bullwinkle. Here, David shares a few thoughts on his time working on Neighbours...
How long have you been acting for?
Neighbours was my first big TV show. I've been in school plays twice.
Had you auditioned for any other Neighbours roles before playing Coby?
Not before Coby, no, but I have since.
Did you enjoy playing Coby?
Yes!
How did it feel to be the first deaf actor to appear on Neighbours?
I feel proud. And because my parents are deaf, they are proud too.
Do you think there’s enough diversity on Neighbours, or would you like to see more characters with disabilities featured?
I would like see more, it would make it more interesting. Maybe Coby could return with a deaf family.
Were there any actors you particularly enjoyed working with?
I enjoyed work with Morgan Baker (Callum) and Alan Flethcer (Karl). They are awesome people to work with! But I wish I could work with teens such as Margot Robbie (Donna), Hany Lee (Sunny) and James Sorensen (Declan).
How did it feel to be working alongside such an established cast?
On my first day, I was so nervous! But I enjoyed it and I miss it.
Would you ever like to return to the series?
Yes, I want to come back. Hopefully they can come up with an interesting story for Coby.
Have you ever been a Neighbours viewer yourself?
I've watched Neighbours since I was nine!
What have you been up to recently?
After I finished filming Neighbours, I went back to school. And I got an ABC tv show, we haven't started filming yet but soon.
And I'm always auditioning for other tv shows too.
With Neighbours about to begin its twenty-fifth anniversary year, why do you think the show has lasted so long?
Because the show is popular! People love to watch it! I never want it end! I love that show and hope I can come back. :)
