Magic Moments > 1999 > The 1999 Season Premiere Episode 3221
Written by Lyn Ogilvy, Directed by Chris Adshead and Gary Conway
Anne chats about her night with Bill to Amy. Sally suggests playing pool with Drew, then going to see a movie with him. He says he has Sarah's fridge to fix and she says, "If we make it, we
make it." He is in his room getting changed, when Sally walks in on him.
Karl and Joel find a distressed Anne in the ute down by the river. Joel and
Karl try to get the ute out of the mud, but it slides down, trapping Joel's
leg underneath. The storm drains break, causing the river to flood. Anne
goes to get help, while Karl uses some tubing to make sure Joel can breathe
underwater as the water level rises. Anne arrives back at camp, screaming at
Lance and Billy that she needs to call the emergency services. Joel hand
loses its grip on Karl's...
Drew says that this is all a bit unexpected. Sally says it's not totally
unexpected, but Drew says he can't do that to a mate, while Sally reminds
him she's not with Joel anymore. He says he'd hate it if a friend of his did
a similar thing and she asks him how long she has to wait. She then moves in
closer and they kiss, but Drew breaks it off, saying that it just isn't
going to happen. He says it doesn't feel right, she asks if there's someone
else but he insists there isn't. He says she's beautiful but it's just
really bad timing. He asks her to leave his room, so he can change.
Anne finally manages to get a signal on the mobile and explains the situation.
. . .
Susan arrives at number 26 and asks Phil if he's heard anything from the
kids. She says she's worried that Karl isn't back yet, because they had
plans. She asks Phil to ring the mobile as she just has a weird feeling, but
he can't get through as they're out of range. She thinks she's just being
neurotic and they're probably fine. Phil thinks they may have been flooded
out of camp, or maybe the Thunderbird has broken down.
Drew walks Sally to her car and he promises her he'll keep the whole incident between them.
. . .
The rescue helicopters arrive, and Billy, Anne and Lance see them flying
over the camp. Karl is still keeping a tight grip on Joel's hand when he
hears the helicopters and rescue trucks arriving and calls out to them. They
manage to winch the car out of the water and Karl explains to them that Joel
is barely breathing. The helicopter brings a stretcher down and Joel is put
on to it where they check him for signs of life. Karl is treated for shock,
while Joel is taken back into the helicopter on the stretcher.
. . .
. . .
Phil reports to Susan what he's been told about the situation Anne's being
treated for hypothermia, while Joel and Karl have been airlifted to
hospital. They decide to go to the hospital, to be there when they arrive.
Just then, the phone rings and it's Karl.
At the hospital, Dr.Olenski is telling Joel how lucky he is. He wants to
know how bad the damage on his leg is, she insists it's too early to tell.
She says they'll have to wait until the swelling goes down, but there
appears to have been some ligament damage. Karl comes in and the doctor
leaves them alone. Karl realises that Joel is worried about his leg but
insists that they're doing all they can. Susan comes in and tells them how
the kids are doing. Joel asks Susan to thank Anne and says he'll call his
mum to let her know later. Joel is worried that the story will get reported
and Dominator Sports will read about it. Outside his room, Susan tells Karl
he saved Joel's life and he says that Anne played her part too.
. . .
Phil goes in to see Anne and tells her she has to stay overnight. She says
she hates hospitals but he insists it's necessary. Anne is worried about the
Thunderbird, but Phil says it's the least of anyone's worries. Phil wants to
know why Anne ran off in the first place, it's not like her to do something
so rash. She doesn't want to talk about it. Billy comes in and Phil leaves
to give Lance a life home. Billy tries to find out what's wrong with Anne,
but she won't talk to him. He tells her she can't blame herself for the
accident and she's she doesn't she blames Billy.
. . .
Anne goes on to explain what she heard Billy saying to Pinhead. Billy
insists it was just to get Pinhead off his case and to play the whole
situation down so Pinhead didn't go spreading it around. He tells her that
he wanted their night together to be something special between them and for
it to be about trust, but she obviously didn't trust him very much when she
ran off like that. She starts crying and breaks down; saying that she can't
believe she almost got Joel killed.
Drew and Sally bump into each other in the coffee shop and discuss what's
happened to Joel. Drew says he was going to go to the hospital, but they
only want family members visiting tonight. He says she should go, since
she's his girlfriend, but she tells him she isn't anymore, but she'll go
tomorrow. Drew then leaves after promising Sally he won't say anything to
Joel about what went on.
. . .
Anne goes to see Joel to see how he is. He says he's been better, but he's
in a lot of pain. She says she bets he wishes they'd never invited him to go
camping, but he says he'd have been offended if they hadn't. She starts
crying and apologising again, but he says it was just an accident.
Joel wakes up to find Sally waiting by his bed. He asks how she is - she says
she's fine, but insists she has to get to work. There is a definite
atmosphere between them, but he asks her to stay a bit longer, which she
agrees to.
. . .
Phil gets off the phone from the lawyer, who explains that Anne has to sign
some more forms before the content of Lily's will be released. Karl arrives
to see Lance, whose throat is getting worse. Karl explains he's taken the
day off and that the Thunderbird has been towed to Lou's garage.
Joel tells Sally that he's never been so scared. Drew arrives to visit
aswell, then decides he might come back later, but Sally insists she'll
leave. She leans over to kiss Joel and they linger for a moment, then Sally
leaves quickly. After she's gone, Joel thanks Drew, saying that whatever he
said to Sally has worked, because she seems to want to work things out.
. . .

Notes: To mark the beginning of a new season, a brand new theme tune and title sequence was devised - ditching the previous theme which had lasted seven years on the show. Some parts of the hospital scene between Billy and Anne were cut by the BBC censors.
