Following the sudden death of Britney Barnes, who was killed when a telegraph pole fell onto the Flamingo Bar during a storm, her devastated friends and family gathered in Melbourne for her funeral. As well as Britney's parents, George and Annie, the funeral was attended by Britney's grieving partner, Leo Tanaka and their baby daughter, Abigail, as well as the friends she'd made on Ramsay Street. As well as George and Annie, those who spoke included Leo, his brother, David, and Nicolette Stone, who had formed a close friendship with Britney. Before they returned home to Wollongong - where a memorial service would be attended by Britney's other family and friends - George and Annie thanked those who had spoken, and explained that they'd asked for half of Britney's ashes to be sent to them, so that they could be scattered on her favourite beach, hopeful that one day, they'd be able to show Abigail her mum's favourite place.
