When Mike Young invited his friend Karl Kennedy to join him on one of his motorbike tours in Europe, Karl was delighted to accept, but was concerned about leaving wife Susan and daughter Holly, particularly as Susan was running Eirini Rising on her own, after owner Terese was asked to leave. Susan then pointed out that it might be good for Eirini to have a new face around the place to help the residents move on from Terese's departure and it was arranged for locum Dr Sameer Bishara to replace Karl while he was away.

Several weeks later, as Karl had been injured during his trip to Europe, Sameer's stint as doctor had been extended. After spotting Vera Punt being given a tour of Eirini, Sameer later bumped into her at Harolds Cafe, with the dishy doctor giving Vera the final motivation she needed to sign the contract, telling him that she looked forward to their first consultation, as her feet needed some attention.
