When Clive Gibbons arranged a secretarial job for Madge Mitchell, as she was desperate for money, he didn’t reveal to her new boss, Bev Black, quite how inexperienced Madge was. On her first day, Bev asked Madge to work with an electric typewriter, but she soon found herself unable to type out even a basic document. Bev was sympathetic, and showed Madge how to use the photocopier instead. Madge had just as much trouble with that machine, so Bev asked her to do some simple old-fashioned filing. This was the final straw, and Madge thanked Bev for her patience, but explained that she simply wasn’t cut out for a modern office and quit after only one morning.
