After a flare-up of her MS symptoms, Susan Kennedy decided to start attending a yoga class at the community centre and was pleased to meet instructor Bernard. The two enjoyed some flirting during the class, and later bumped into each other at the store, where he told her about his divorced and former career as an architect. But when he asked her out for a drink afterwards, she quickly backed off and explained that she was too busy. After telling Summer about Bernard's offer, Susan began to have a re-think and went to find him, agreeing to go out, and the pair's first date ended up taking place at Charlie's bar, where Susan's ex-husband Karl was performing with his band. Susan had agreed to support Karl at his gig, but was worried about how Bernard would react, only for him to get on well with Karl and start dancing, badly, to their music in front of everyone. At the end of the evening, Susan was alarmed when Bernard leaned in for a kiss and she realised that she didn't want things to go any further between them. The next day, she ended up attending a pre-natal yoga class with expectant mums Vanessa and Sonya, explaining the situation to them, only for Bernard to arrive as their stand-in teacher. As Susan struggled to make her feelings clear, Vanessa finally blurted out the truth, making it obvious to Bernard - and everyone else in the class - that Susan was no longer interested in dating him.
