After rescuing his girlfriend Mackenzie Hargreaves from a fire at Erinsborough High, Hendrix Greyson was struggling with a nasty cough several weeks later, and went to the hospital for tests. The following day, Hendrix met with Dr Sian Caton to get the results, and she explained that he had sarcoidosis, an auto-immune disease, which was usually treatable, but following his exposure to the smoke in the fire, it had developed into pulmonary fibrosis, only treatable with a lung transplant. A few weeks later, Hendrix, only days after marrying Mackenzie, underwent the lung transplant operation. Initially, Dr Caton reported that everything had gone well in the operation and Hendrix seemed to be recovering well, but within hours, he was struggling for breath. As Hendrix's family waited for news, Dr Caton informed Karl Kennedy, with whom Hendrix had been lodging for a while, that the donor lungs were being rejected by Hendrix's body. She allowed Karl to deliver this news to Hendrix's parents and Mackenzie, telling them that he had only a few hours to live. As Dr Caton suggested that they would normally sedate a patient in such a position, Hendrix said that he wanted to stay awake, and he spent his final few hours surrounded by family before passing away.
