When Greg Cooper came to Erinsborough from Perth, he was surprised to meet Des Clarke, who had been friends with him and his brother, Colin, back in Western Australia. Having explained that Colin, a boxer, had died, Greg quickly clammed up, but later, during a dinner party, Des tried to find out more, leading to Greg becoming upset and walking out. Des felt guilty, explaining that it was Greg who had been the one who was interested in boxing, but Colin had the talent for it. When Greg’s behaviour then become more and more erratic, he finally broke down and confessed to boss Jim Robinson that he was responsible for Colin’s death. He went on to explain that his girlfriend had left him for Colin and, angry at the betrayal, he had stepped into the boxing ring with his brother and badly beaten him. Colin had fallen and hit his head as he left the ring, resulting in his death, and a verdict of ‘death by misadventure’ had been found, but Greg always blamed himself and, realising that he couldn’t escape his past in Erinsborough, he left.
