After the dramatic end to her relationship with Mark Brennan, Paige Smith decided to make some changes in her life, and enrolled on a university course. Before officially starting her course, she sat in on a general studies seminar with her friend Courtney Grixti and half-sister Imogen Willis. There, after initially feeling that she was out of her depth, she managed to impress lecturer Noel Creighton with her opinions on the recent battle for the role of Mayor of Erinsborough between Tim Collins and Sonya Rebecchi, and the way Sonya was criticised for being a working mother.

A couple of weeks later, Courtney decided that Paige needed to start moving on from Mark, and arranged a date for her - but Paige was in for a shock when Noel showed up. He was worried by her reaction, but she agreed to have a drink with him, though the date seemed destined for disaster as Paige's disapproving parents, Lauren and Brad, watched from nearby. Having had enough of their judgmental looks, Paige took Noel to get something to eat at Grease Monkeys. When Lauren and Brad then overheard Mark on his way to play basketball down at the garage - which was situated opposite Grease Monkeys - they had to warn him what was going on, and a surprised Mark then went down there and confronted Paige about how quickly she seemed to be moving on from him.
