When newly qualified teacher Wendy Rodwell got some work as a relief teacher for a morning at Erinsborough High, students Jasmine Stewart and Ryan Deely planned to have some fun with her. Their classmate Dex Varga-Murphy, whose brother JJ was Wendy's nephew, told them to give her an easy time and not play any pranks on her, which they reluctantly agreed to. Wendy was delighted when the class were so well-behaved, as several other relief teaching gigs had gone badly for her, but things changed quickly when she caught Ryan handing a note around the class. It turned out to be about Nell Rebecchi, JJ's girlfriend who had recently been charged with involuntary manslaughter after accidentally killing Sebastian Metcalfe. When Dex heard that the other kids had been calling her 'Death Nell' and were assuming she wouldn't be coming back to school, a fight broke out. Wendy quickly dealt with the situation, sending Ryan to the principal's office, calming everyone else down and continuing with the class.
