Ricky Denham 2025

After a speight of copper thefts from building sites in the area, then the arrest of Ricky Denham on an unrelated matter, newly-qualified police officer Cara Varga-Murphy began to wonder about a connection to the Linwell brothers. A couple of years earlier, whilst still working in the construction industry in Werribee, Cara had exposed the unsafe work practices of Eric and Dale Linwell's projects and they had attempted to intimidate her by threatening her and her family. The brothers had ended up in prison but, with their parole hearings approaching, she was determined to prove that they were somehow linked to the recent crime and keep them behind bars. As Ricky had been one of their associates, she felt that he was the key to proving this, but her colleague Andrew Rodwell and their senior Tony Thompson feared that she was seeing something that wasn't there. However, after realising that she was just following her instincts - something he had encouraged her to do - Andrew told her to look into it and see what she could find out.

Having spoken to estate agent and friend Rhett Norman, Cara learnt that a warehouse in Waratah Heights had been sold to Ricky's uncle, Bill Denham, but that it was believed that it wasn't being used for anything. Cara decided to go and check it out, but when Andrew was too busy to join her, she made the impulsive decision to go on her own. As she arrived, she found evidence of criminal activity, including a bag of guns in the boot of a car, but as she took photographs, she was interrupted by the arrival of Ricky. Forced to hide out, she managed to get a message to Andrew, who arrived to help, and also got a recording of a phone conversation Ricky was having, in which he mentioned someone called Jonesy and that he and his accomplices had someone working with them on the inside of the government. After taking this information to Tony, who was initially furious that Cara had put herself in that position, he admitted that her instincts had been right and that they would have to put more resources into investigating what was going on.

When journalist Elle Robinson then found the police report at Cara's house, she decided to try and revive her writing career with an article for The Daily Monster, examining the Linwell family's activities and speculating over the identity of Jonesy. The article left Cara receiving anonymous threats, with her wife and sons being sent away from Ramsay Street for their safety. Cara was also worried about her dad, who often went off-grid and when he failed to answer his phone, she found him knocked out with a head wound in his caravan. Cara then brought Greg back to Ramsay Street to stay with her, unaware that he had been secretly working for Tania Linwell and was using Cara and Elle to find out how close they were getting to the truth, before feeding this information back to Tania and her stooges, Ricky and Jax.
