When Lucas Fitzgerald learnt that he had testicular cancer, he decided to keep the information from his partner, Vanessa, as she had only just started to move on from the stress of their baby son Patrick being seriously ill with a heart condition. Instead, Lucas ended up confiding in old friend Steph Scully, a cancer survivor herself and recently released from prison, she was determined to be a part of Lucas's life again, encouraging him to keep it from Vanessa until he knew his prognosis. After learning that the cancer hadn't spread, and that he would require an operation to remove one of his testicles, Lucas told Vanessa everything, but failed to mention that Steph had already known for several days. At the hospital, as Steph and Vanessa waited for news following Lucas's operation, Dr Alice Dollard came to speak to them, with the news that the operation had gone well, but addressing all of this to Steph rather than Vanessa. When Vanessa pointed out that she was Lucas's partner, Dr Dollard apologised, admitting that she had assumed that Steph was his partner, as she had been with him at his pre-op appointments.
