After Emmett Donaldson, who was being fostered by David Tanaka and Aaron Brennan, went to live with his Aunt Linda, he returned several weeks later with the news that Linda, having struggled to find work, was moving back to New Zealand and wanted him to go with her. Already finding it difficult living with his aunt, and not wanting to move overseas, Emmett asked if he could move back in with David and Aaron. Whilst they were happy to have him back, they knew that the fostering agency would be unhappy with the arrangement, as Nicolette Stone, who was having a baby with Aaron and David, was now living with them and had been through some legal problems. After it was arranged that Nicolette could move across the street to no. 24, Linda arrived on Ramsay Street to discuss Emmett's future.

Whilst David and Aaron were keen for him to stay with them, Linda's main issue was that Emmett's older brother, Brent, was staying and she felt that he was a bad influence. Brent was upset as he overheard Linda's poor opinion of him, but David soon pointed out to him that they needed to put on a united front and make Linda see that Emmett would be happiest staying on Ramsay Street. Unfortunately, Linda wouldn't change her mind, particularly after hearing about the baby that was on the way, feeling that David and Aaron wouldn't have enough time to devote to Emmett. Having failed to convince Linda, David and Aaron contacted Leila Potts from the agency, feeling that they might be able to convince her that staying with them in Australia was best for Emmett. This plan worked and, a few days after meeting with them all and hearing what they had to say, Leila got in touch and told them that she would give approval for Emmett to stay with them long-term.
