After a brief stint in Erinsborough at the turn of the century, Daniel Fitzgerald met Samantha Grieves and they fell in love. They married and had a happy few years together, during which Sam fell pregnant. The pregnancy was unexpected and Sam took Dan to a park to tell him the news, wanting to tell him somewhere nice, worried that he wasn’t ready. Dan, however, was overjoyed and imagined himself sometime in the future, surfing with his son. But at 6 months, Sam suffered a miscarriage. They named their unborn child James but never had time to properly grieve for him as Sam developed bi-polar disorder.

Eventually, Sam walked out on Dan, not wanting to keep burdening him with looking after her. She told him not to look for her and two years later he returned to Erinsborough, where he fell for Libby Kennedy. He had to track Sam down to try and get a divorce and, as well as creating many other problems, this brought back memories of their lost son. Dan showed Sam a box that he had kept with items such as a pregnancy scan and an obituary he placed in the paper. Finally taking the time to grieve for their son together, Sam and Dan visited the park where she first told him that she was pregnant and they laid flowers on the swings for James.
