Leonard Foster 2003
When Lou Carpenter found out that Leonard Foster was planning to review his pub, with the intention of including it in an international book of gourmet hotels, he decided to revamp his menu, adding lots of classy new dishes and writing them in French. When Leonard arrived for his meal, Lou gave him the best table, then phoned his friend Harold Bishop, who owned the nearby Coffee Shop, with the order. Unfortunately, Lou had made some last-minute changes to the menu, and Leonard ordered the lamb, which Harold didn’t have, so instead they ordered the food from local restaurant Lanzini’s. Leonard was very impressed, telling Lou that he would put it in the book, but left a card saying that the whole thing had been a scam organised by Hank and Mary Ellis – a couple who had tried scamming him a few weeks earlier with a letter of complaint, hoping for a free meal.
