Having given up on her dream of becoming a dancer, Kate Ramsay still longed to see if she had what it took to be a professional, but, following the death of her mother, she was forced to take on responsibility for her two younger siblings, Harry and Sophie. Wanting to help, Harry took on a part-time job to pay for Kate to attend lessons at Jason Coleman's Ministry of Dance. There, instructor Lauren warned Kate that it was going to be touch and, after the first lesson, took her aside for a chat. As Kate explained that she hadn't danced in 18 months, Lauren told her that she would need to work on her flexibility, fitness, and memory for the choreography, but kindly pointed out that it wasn't impossible if she was dedicated enough. A few weeks later, Kate was due to take part in the auditions for the Ministry's showcase, but the night before, she called and said that she was dropping out, unable to continue due to family commitments. But on the big day, she changed her mind and, with Sophie and Harry in tow, raced to the studios to take part. With only minutes to spare, she arrived, but Lauren said that they'd already heard her voicemail and besides, she didn't have time to warm up. After begging for a chance, Jason told Kate that she could join the group once she was warmed up, but she still ended up slightly out of step with everyone else. As the audition ended, Jason told Kate that, although she had natural talent, her audition just hadn't been good enough and that she would have to give 100% to dance if she was serious about it.

Some weeks later, Kate was given another audition and a final chance to get into the showcase. Despite being ill and having doubts that she could do it, Kate went along and performed for Jason and Lauren. As Jason realised that not everyone's heart was in it, he told them all to take a five minute break and, in the dressing room, Kate saw a vision of her dead mum, who told her to do her best. Revitalised, Kate returned and danced her heart out, scoring a place in the Ministry of Dance showcase.
