As recovering alcoholic Terese Willis secretly started drinking again, she was forced to wait for a late laundry delivery at Eirini Rising, the retirement home she owned. After Terese had spent the evening drinking alone, delivery driver John Haider arrived with the laundry, apologising for the delay and asking Terese if she was OK, as she could barely stand up. She insisted that she was just tired, having spent half the night waiting for him, and he accepted this and, after apologising again, drove away. Terese then got in the car to make her own way home, unwittingly reversing into the gas pipe as she went, causing the whole building to have to be evacuated later that night.

The incident led to Eirini Rising being evacuated, with one resident, Gino Esposito, collapsing and being taken to hospital where he suffered a heart attack. As Terese realised that she was responsible, her ex-husband, Paul Robinson, attempted to help her to cover up the crime, as she feared that she'd lose Eirini and face criminal charges. However, when she found out that John had come forward, fearing that he was the person who'd damaged the pipe, and had lost his job and was facing charges himself, she couldn't keep silent. Though Paul attempted to take the blame himself, Terese owned up to her horrified colleagues and the shocked residents at the retirement home. John was then informed that he was innocent, while Terese was asked to step down from her job, received a fine and a driving ban and left to check herself into rehab.
