After noticing tension at home, Jesse Hardy worried that his mum, Lydia, was cheating on his dad with an escort again, something that had happened a few years earlier. After finding messages on her phone, he came to the incorrect conclusion that she was seeing the same escort, Harvey J, aka Byron Stone. Jesse attacked Byron and left him hospitalised, before pasting pictures from his escort profile, along with a phone number, on the wall outside the Community Centre. However, the number actually belonged to Byron's friend, Taye Obasi, who had gone into the escorting business to get himself out of debt, and had started regularly seeing Lydia. When Taye had tried to quit escorting and cut ties with Lydia, she had blackmailed him into carrying on - as a senior member of the police force, she was mentoring Taye's sister-in-law, Cara Varga-Murphy, as she attempted to become a police officer. With Lydia threatening to harm Cara's career, Taye went along with it but when the truth came out, Lydia claimed to have no knowledge, fearful that her behaviour would destroy her career. It was only when Cara worked out that Jesse had been behind Byron's attack, and made Lydia see how her actions were affecting her son, that she finally came clean. Jesse was then charged with assault, whilst Lydia was charged with perverting the course of justice and sexual servitude, and she apologised to Taye and Cara for the way her actions had affected them.
