After his friend Kasey McGann was roofied by a group of guys, Max Ramsay decided to get revenge. He spiked the drink of Carter Haddon then drove him out to
the middle of nowhere and left him there, hoping that it would go some way to make him see how violated Kasey had felt. Unfortunately, Carter then almost died
after being lost for three days and turned out to be the younger brother of one of Brisbane's biggest gangsters. With Max worried that the Haddon family would
be out for revenge, he explained everything to his dad, Shane, who sent him to Erinsborough to hide out.
A few months later, thinking that the threat had passed, Kasey visited Max, which appeared to have led the Haddons right to his door. Though Holly Hoyland,
the only person on Ramsay Street who Max had told about his problem, told him to send Kasey back to Queensland, it looked like it was too late when a mystery
figure put a substance in Max's drink that night at the Waterhole. The drink ended up being drunk by Aaron Brennan, who almost drowned after passing out in
number 32's swimming pool, and Max realised that he had to tell Andrew Rodwell, Ramsay Street's resident police sergeant, what was going on. He agreed to keep
an eye on an increasingly paranoid Max, who constantly checked his food and drink and avoided going out wherever possible. When his housemate, and Andrew's
daughter, Sadie, went on a night out with Holly, Max decided that it would be safer for them if he didn't go. Unfortunately, this proved to be wrong, as the
girls were watched by Carter's henchman Lachie Jensen, who wrongly believed that Sadie was Max's girlfriend. He managed to spike her drink and, when Holly went
outside to take a call, Lachie left the bar with a shaky Sadie, before dumping her in the middle of nowhere, just as Max had done to Carter.
When a panicked Holly then phoned Max to see if he'd heard from Sadie, he raised the alarm, with Andrew quickly involving the police and Sadie's furious
boyfriend Byron Stone finding out the real reason for Max's move to Erinsborough. With Byron struggling to control his temper, Max walked out of the house,
only to find himself being confronted by Carter. He told Max to get into his car and hand over his phone, saying that it was the only way that they'd ever
find Sadie. After Max complied, an anonymous tip was made to the police, allowing Andrew and Byron to find Sadie, who was severely shaken by her ordeal, but
otherwise unharmed. Carter then sent a message to Holly, claiming to be from Max, saying that he had decided to lie low for a while, after all of the trouble
he'd caused.
When Lachie then turned up in Erinsborough again, he was looking for Roxy Canning, Max's cousin. Roxy had previously been helping Max's dad, Shane, with
his business in Brisbane and it seemed that Lachie had deliberately bumped into her in a bar one night, using her to find out where Max had gone. After Roxy
arrived in Erinsborough to help Terese Willis with the running of Eirini Rising for a few weeks, it seemed that she had been the one who had led Carter to
Max and that, as Max had managed to evade his captors, Lachie had now been tasked with finding him again. Hopeful that Roxy might lead him to Max, Lachie got
chatting to her and she soon made it clear that she was married and that she shouldn't have led him on. He seemed to take this news well, but he continued
to watch Roxy from afar, convinced that she would eventually help him to find Max's hiding place.
After watching Roxy for a few days, Lachie followed her and Max to the garage where he worked. Max had agreed to take part in a sting operation to catch
Carter, but had arranged for an emergency passport to be delivered to the garage in case anything went wrong and he needed to make a quick getaway. As Byron,
Sadie and Nicolette were then passing, walking Trevor the dog, he ran off into the garage and the three of them were surprised to find Max. However, the
happy reunion proved to be brief, as Lachie threw a Molotov cocktail through the window. Though they all managed to escape with their lives, Sadie was
left with serious burns to her back and Lachie was soon caught and questioned, revealing how he'd used Roxy to track down Max. Much to the relief of Max
and his friends, Lachie then turned on Carter, helping the police to find and arrest him.
