After being gifted a trip to Hamilton Island by Leo Tanaka and Krista Sinclair, Aaron Brennan planned to take the holiday with his young daughter, Isla. However, when Isla was diagnosed with an ear infection, he was persuaded to go on his own and, having been grieving the loss of husband David for over a year, he decided that he would take the break. He quickly hit it off with Colton Keys, another guest at the resort, as they chatted about the book they were both reading. Making the snap decision that he didn't want to explain the whole story about David, Aaron lied to Colton, saying that he was called Charlie and was a flight attendant from Sydney. As Colton opened up about his cheating ex, the pair enjoyed spending a few hours together, went snorkelling and it wasn't long before things progressed further and they ended up in bed. But as Colton collected his clothes, he found Aaron's wallet and, as he picked it up, it fell open to a photo of Aaron, David and Isla. When Aaron woke up, he was forced to tell Colton that he'd lied about everything and, whilst Colton was sympathetic over Aaron's loss and his grief causing him to lie, he turned down Aaron's offer of meeting up again and making a fresh start. Aaron was disappointed as Colton asked that, if he saw him again during his time on the island, he could turn and walk the other way.

A few weeks later, Colton suddenly turned up in Erinsborough, gatecrashing a croquet date that Aaron was enjoying with Rhett Norman. Rhett and Aaron had dated earlier in the year but had split up as Aaron was still struggling to move on from David. Though Colton initially claimed that it was just a coincidence, he later admitted to Aaron that he'd looked him up on social media and, when a job opportunity came up at nearby retirement complex Eirini Rising, he decided to fly down from Queensland. After getting the job, Colton asked Aaron if he was now open to a new relationship and Aaron told him that he was. But with both Rhett and Colton now interested in pursuing things, Aaron suddenly found himself in a love triangle, unsure who he wanted to be with.

After inviting Aaron to a yoga class that day, Colton hung around The Waterhole bar, where Aaron worked, and met his friends and neighbours Remi and Cara. Whilst Remi was impressed with Colton and his knowledge of natural health remedies, Cara felt that Rhett was a better option and, after bumping into him, suggested that he should go along to the yoga class too. Colton and Rhett then spent the entire class competing for Aaron's attention, leaving him feeling awkward and beating a hasty retreat before the class was over. After going for a run together the next day, Colton and Aaron arranged to go for a drink that night, leaving Aaron to turn down Rhett's offer of a trip to the theatre, and causing him to worry that he was just leading both guys on. Having been persuaded that he just needed to concentrate on having fun, Aaron went along to meet Colton that night, where they quickly bonded, but Aaron was left disappointed when Colton went home early, as he was starting his new job at Eirini the next day. When Colton then turned down Aaron's offer to go back to his place the following afternoon, Aaron began to worry that their initial physical attraction on Hamilton Island had already fizzled out.

Meanwhile, Colton found himself starting at Eirini in the midst of a scandal - the retirement complex's doctor, Darcy Tyler, had just been imprisoned after it was revealed that he had stolen $2 million dollars of shares from resident Amanda Harris and was suspected of killing her to cover up his crime. He had also stolen medication from resident Elenora Santoro and used it to inject his uncle, Karl Kennedy, Eirini's other doctor, who had come close to the truth. The medication had made it look like Karl had suffered from a stroke and, although he was slowly recovering, these revelations had left all of the Eirini residents feeling very uneasy and talking about leaving. Colton quickly proved his worth to Terese Willis, the owner of Eirini Rising, as he pointed out to Vera Punt that she and the other residents had also been taken in by Darcy. He suggested that they could all come together and find a way to work through the trauma, rather than allowing Darcy to divide them and force them out of their homes. Vera later reported that, although some were still unhappy and thinking about leaving, she and her friend Gino were planning to stay, and she added that she was impressed with Colton and that he could stay.

The following week, as a party was held to welcome Saskia Ramsay to no. 32, Remi decided to invite Colton along, unaware that Cara had also invited Rhett. As the two men once again got competitive over Aaron, he asked Colton why he'd rejected his advances a few days earlier. Colton explained that it had been his first day in his new job and he was worried about making a good impression, and that he'd been working hard to impress Terese since then. He insisted that he was still attracted to Aaron, but the competitiveness then reached new heights during a game of volleyball in the pool. As it all became too much for him, Aaron left the party and went home, leaving Nicolette to spot that Rhett and Colton were suddenly enjoying each other's company. After they went into the house together, she later found out that they'd spent ages in the bathroom together before going back to Rhett's place, and she was quick to report back to Aaron that, as he'd been unable to choose between Rhett and Colton, they appeared to have chosen each other.
