When Elly Conway was unexpectedly sent to prison by Judge Joseph Vagg, having been led to believe that she would receive a suspended sentence, lawyer Toadie Rebecchi started to look into the matter. After finding out that Judge Vagg's clerk, Meg Lee, had recently quit her job, Toadie arranged to meet up with her. Though Meg was reluctant to talk about the matter, Toadie was convinced that she knew that the judge was being bribed and pointed out that she could be in a lot of trouble when the truth got out. After he explained that Elly had a five-month-old daughter, Meg finally gave it and admitted that she'd been fired after finding out that her boss was being blackmailed over massive gambling debts that even his wife didn't know about. She admitted that she hadn't reported him as she felt he was a good person and that he'd come clean, but as that hadn't happened, she agreed to help Toadie.
