Whilst experimenting with his sexuality, Rhett Norman had a one-night stand with a woman, who then fell pregnant. As Rhett had realised that he was gay, and the woman had moved on and got married, he decided that it would be easiest if he stayed out of daughter Tilly's life. As he considered getting in touch, Rhett found out that they had moved away and, not knowing where they'd gone, he decided that he had to accept that his daughter was happy and being well looked after. However, after meeting Aaron Brennan, and seeing his close relationship with his little girl, Isla, he had second thoughts. Though things didn't work out for Rhett and Aaron initially, Rhett decided to get back in touch with Tilly and her mum, and was soon having regular access visits.

When Rhett and Aaron then reconnected a few months later, Aaron was caught up in a love triangle, struggling to choose between Rhett and another man, Colton Keys, who were both showing interest in a relationship. As things progressed, Aaron and Isla were in the Lassiters park one day when Rhett and Tilly came along. Tilly and Isla quickly hit it off, and Aaron and Rhett also found themselves having a great chat, finally feeling relaxed around each other after a difficult few days. However, when Tilly then asked if Isla could come home with them for tea, to learn some dance routines and meet her cat, Burrito, Rhett became awkward again and told his daughter that they needed to rush off as they were already running late.

Rhett and Aaron eventually decided that they were going to make a go of their relationship and, after a few weeks, made plans to tell Tilly and Isla. Unfortunately, when Rhett then spotted Aaron's neighbours, Andrew Rodwell and Holly Hoyland, kissing, Aaron refused to believe it, implying that maybe Rhett was out for revenge after cop Andrew had given him a driving fine. With Rhett feeling that Aaron didn't trust him and always jumped to the worst conclusions, he considered not telling their daughters about their relationship. However, they agreed to put the matter behind them, realising that they'd never agree about it and that it was none of their business, but Aaron was still unsure about whether Rhett and Tilly were going to come over for tea as planned. Just as Aaron was telling Isla that they might not be able to come to her tea party, they turned up and soon, Rhett and Aaron told their daughters that they were boyfriends, with both girls giving their approval.

As the relationship between Rhett and Aaron continued, Tilly was very happy to spend more time with Isla, her cousin Abigail and Isla's grandmother, Jane. With Rhett and Aaron then saying 'I love you' to each other for the first time, it seemed that everything was perfect, until Rhett found out that Leanne and her husband were planning a move to Adelaide with Tilly and they wanted Rhett to join them. Though Rhett initially suggested that Aaron, Nicolette and Isla could move with them, Nic was very reluctant to do this, particularly since her brother, Byron, had recently moved away and she didn't want Jane to lose both of her children and her granddaughter in such quick succession. Rhett's next suggestion was for Aaron to split his time between Melbourne and Adelaide but, after some enthusiasm, they all soon realised that it wasn't going to be practical either, and Aaron and Rhett accepted that they might need to try and make a long-distance relationship work.
