Rebecca McCabe 2025
Occupation: Detective Inspector

After learning that there had been a series of copper thefts from building sites in the area, and that a man named Ricky Denham had been arrested nearby on a separate matter, newly-qualified cop Cara Varga-Murphy wondered if there might be a connection to the Linwell brothers. Whilst working in Werribee in the construction industry a couple of years earlier, Cara had exposed the Linwells for their unsafe work practices, leading to a series of threats to her and her family to try and intimidate her into keeping quiet. The brothers had ended up in prison, but were due parole and, as Ricky had been one of the people who'd worked for them, Cara felt that it was more than just a coincidence. After then finding out that Ricky's uncle owned a warehouse nearby, she went there and found a bag containing guns, before managing to record him talking to someone on the phone about how they had someone on the inside of local government helping them, known only as Jonesy.

Though initially skeptical about Cara's suspicions, her seniors agreed to put resources into it when presented with her evidence but it wasn't long before the whole story was blown wide open by journalist Elle Robinson. Having been fired from her previous job in New York, Elle was desperate to get a chance at The Daily Monster online newspaper and, after stumbling upon the police files at Cara's house, she took a chance and made it into a story, impressing editor Wesley Russo. Unfortunately, Elle was unaware of Cara's personal connection to the case and, despite not being mentioned by name in the article, she quickly started receiving threats. Detective Inspector Rebecca McCabe was then brought in to handle the case and she told Cara that, whilst they'd be keeping a close eye on Elle, their main priority was to catch the criminals and to keep Cara's family safe. Though Cara refused to leave Erinsborough, her wife, Remi and their two sons, JJ and Dex, were sent away to Apollo Bay to stay with her father, Ken.
