After returning to Erinsborough, having recently become a multi-millionaire following a brief marriage to an older man, Izzy Hoyland was determined to have another baby, wanting Karl Kennedy to be the father so that the child would be a full sibling to their daughter, Holly. She decided to offer to invest in a new hospital wing, aware of how much Karl wanted it, and soon made it clear that she would only give the hospital the money if he agreed to father another child with her. When he turned her down, Izzy then found out that he had recently been a part of a fertility study at the hospital. Having been given a tour of the research facilities by hospital C.O.O. Clive Gibbons, Izzy later returned, telling nurse Cameron McGlip that she had left her purse behind and needed his help. Though Cameron was reluctant, Izzy explained who she was and that, if he didn't help her, she'd have to tell his bosses that he'd put their potential investment at risk. Having gained access, Izzy then stole the vile containing Karl's sperm sample.

Things soon unravelled for Izzy when the theft was discovered and, despite having used the sample, she failed to get pregnant. She then found out that the will was being contested by the daughter of her late husband and that her money had been cut off, meaning that she could no longer donate the money to the hospital. This then Karl out of a job, as he'd been earmarked to lead the research wing and Izzy fled town, leaving Holly with her dad. Karl was disappointed to learn that he couldn't even collate the data from the fertility study he'd already been working on, so when Holly started doing work experience at the hospital, she decided to steal the files so that Karl could do the work from home. He was horrified and when Clive later called him in for a meeting, he assumed that the theft had been discovered. Clive, however, explained that he'd managed to pull together funding for the research to continue and he wanted Karl to be in charge, explaining that he already had a couple of staff members working on gathering all of the relevant files. Not wanting to jeopardise this opportunity, or to get Holly in trouble, Karl kept quiet about the theft, but when Holly found out about the mess her dad was in, she decided to return the files herself so that he wouldn't have to. Unfortunately, she was caught by nurse Cameron, who reported the incident to Clive, leaving both Holly and Karl in trouble.
