When nurse Freya Wozniak's boyfriend Gareth Bateman disappeared from her life, he claimed that it was because he had witnessed something whilst doing his job at the courthouse, allowing her to believe that it involved the defendants in a gang trial and some corrupt cops. He told Freya that he had to disappear as his life was in danger and she knew that she couldn't contact the police about what had happened, believing that they were corrupt and it would only make matters worse. After searching for almost four months, Freya spotted Gareth in some photos at The Flamingo Bar at Lassiters Hotel, a venue that had been destroyed during a storm. She then turned up in Erinsborough, initially claiming that Gareth was her missing cousin, and growing closer to police constable Levi Canning, hoping that he might be able to help. When she finally told Levi the truth, he involved the anti-corruption commission, and Gareth was eventually tracked down to a caravan park.

Not wanting to get Freya's hopes up, Levi sent their friends Ned Willis and Harlow Robinson to check if it really was Gareth and, after comparing him to photos, they realised that it was. When they were caught snooping by Gareth's girlfriend, Emma McIver, Ned and Harlow quickly tried to leave, but then Gareth turned up. After Gareth found out that they were in contact with Freya, he claimed that she was crazy and that she was the reason that he'd had to go into hiding. He told them both Freya had been increasingly obsessed with him and had started stalking him, then, when he met Emma, Freya had lied that someone was breaking into her house and was going to attack her with a hunting knife. Harlow and Ned believed Gareth's story and reported back to Levi who, due to his closeness to Freya, wasn't quite as quick to believe the worse of her. During the retreat, a photo on social media alerted Gareth to Freya's whereabouts and he went there to find her and to silence Levi. It was soon revealed that Gareth had been working with the gang, helping them with jury notes from the trial, and that they were now protecting him. With the police now involved, Gareth had been tasked with getting rid of Levi, but the whole confrontation ended with Gareth seriously injured after the minibus crashed. As Freya and Dr David Tanaka attempted to help Gareth, Freya informed David that Gareth was responsible for seriously injuring David's husband Aaron and, in a moment of anger, they allowed Gareth to die rather than treating him.

As they attempted to keep on top of their secret, Freya was concerned when Emma turned up, refusing to believe that two medical professionals couldn't save Gareth's life. Emma continued to hassle Freya, eventually breaking into her house and stealing her laptop. As she had been researching books on guilt and trauma, Freya was worried that Emma would work everything out, but when Emma was warned off by Levi and he got the laptop back, it turned out that a jealous Emma had only been interested in deleting any photos of Freya and Gareth on the device.

As she stayed away from Erinsborough, Emma became more involved with Gareth's old gang. Meanwhile, the truth about Freya and David's involvement in Gareth's death came out, with them both facing criminal charges and David, deemed a flight risk, sent to a maximum security prison on remand. Turning this situation to her advantage, Emma contacted Freya, warning that she had contacts in prison and that David would get seriously hurt if Freya didn't help her. Freya was then tasked with giving medical assistance to Emma's criminal friends and, not wanting David to get hurt, she was forced to go along with it all. When Freya failed to help Emma on one occasion, and received a voice note with David crying out in pain having been attacked, she realised that she had to tell the police. As the police came to the realisation that one of the prison guards was corrupt and helping Emma, David was made to wear a wire to try and catch him. Meanwhile, Emma turned up on Freya's doorstep, waving a gun at her and housemate Kiri, demanding that she save the life of a man named Austin, who had been shot. Freya tried to make Emma see that Austin's injuries were serious and he needed to go to hospital, but Emma refused to listen, warning that David was in a lot of danger, having been left alone in a prison yard with Dan Waskett, who was just waiting for word from Emma and he would kill David. As Emma prepared a text saying 'Kill Him' to show that she was serious, Nicolette walked in on the situation, quickly backing up Freya's insistence that Austin needed hospital treatment. As Nicolette forced Emma to look at Austin's injuries, she was briefly distracted, allowing Freya to get the gun and point it at her. In the scuffle, the text was also sent, but fortunately David was found in time, while the police arrived to arrest Emma.
