According to the tales of Ramsay Street resident Mrs Armitage, her husband was a violent man who beat her despite her kindly putting ice in his beer. On several occasions Helen Daniels would be sought out as a confidante by Mrs Armitage, but the usually kindly widow’s lack of any real concern – and the lack of any bruises on Mrs Armitage – suggested these tales of violence were merely attention-seeking from a drama queen. When attempts to portray him as a wife-beater failed, Mrs Armitage tried a new angle, claiming this time that her husband was an adulterer, having an affair with a newsagent in the city.
