As his marriage came to an end, Max Ramsay moved out of his family home and into a bedsit, where he immediately met formidable housekeeper Mrs French in the hallway. She was furious to learn of his arrival, explaining that nobody had informed her, and his room wasn't ready as she hadn't been able to get access to it for over a week. Max said that he was happy to take the room as it was, but once inside, he found a woman asleep under a blanket on the sofa. Mrs French soon sent the woman packing, while Max set off for work, leaving the annoying housekeeper to clean his room. Later, an old man came to Max's door, explaining that he'd once stayed in that room, but there was a terrible smell, so he moved. He also said that he'd overheard Mrs French on the phone, checking Max's reference, then the woman herself turned up, wanting to know if Max had any complaints about her cleaning. It was a relief, then, that only a couple of weeks later, Mrs French left her job to be replaced by the far nicer Edith Harris.
