When Remi Varga's dad cheated on her mum, then left her for the other woman, he ended up having a son, Taye, with her several years later. Remi was never close to her half-brother as he grew up, but when Taye found himself in a romantic entanglement with three different girls on the go, and beat a hasty retreat from his home in Apollo Bay, he noticed on social media that Remi had gone to New York with her wife, Cara, and their two sons, JJ and Dex. He decided to use their empty house in Erinsborough as a place to lie low, and when Cara was then hospitalised in New York, the boys returned early in order to start the new school year. Neighbour Andrew Rodwell offered to stock the fridge and keep an eye on them until their mums returned and, having already believed he'd seen the curtains move at the Varga-Murphy house, Andrew was confused when he returned to find that a full carton of milk was half-empty. When he then heard a noise in the sun room, he grabbed a cricket bat and prepared to confront the intruder, only to be interrupted by JJ and Dex arriving home. Having found the room empty, Andrew thought that he must have been imagining things and concentrated on helping the boys settle back in at home.

However, it wasn't long before Dex found his uncle hiding out and quickly alerted JJ, at which point they sent Andrew out to get burgers, giving them the chance to find out what Taye was doing in their house. He explained the situation and the boys agreed to talk Andrew into going home that night, allowing them to spend some time with their uncle without their mums finding out. Though Dex was delighted to have his mischievous uncle around, JJ was uncomfortable with the whole situation, particularly due to the complicated family history, worrying that there'd be trouble if Remi found out about the house guest. After trying to encourage his nephews to wag school on their first day back, Taye caused further problems by sending the boys a photo of the mini golf course he'd set up in the house, leaving JJ worried that Andrew would call in and find out. When JJ and Dex then returned home to tidy up, they found that Taye wasn't there, having gone to the Waterhole to play pool. Becoming increasingly annoyed with JJ's worrying, Dex returned home after school to find Taye still working on his golf course and, not wanting to appear as uptight as his brother, Dex then accepted when his uncle offered him a beer.

As he started making friends in Erinsborough, Taye met Fallon Morell, another new arrival, who told him about her dramas with her sister. He also met mechanic Max Ramsay, leaving JJ and Dex worried, as Max was their neighbour, but as JJ became more and more stressed by the situation, Taye decided to help his nephews to have some fun by throwing a party. Unfortunately, Remi and Cara then arrived back a couple of days early from New York, stunned to find the house full of partygoers and a naked Taye in the kitchen, preparing for a skinny dip. This wasn't the only shock though, as Dex was drunk and ended up confessing the whole story about how they'd been hiding Taye from Andrew for the last week. Having never been close to Taye, Remi tried to understand why he'd ended up at her house, but he immediately became defensive, saying that he knew that she viewed him as a walking insult to her mum. Remi was surprised by this, insisting that she didn't view him that way, but realised that they'd never been close, having not seen each other since Taye's 18th birthday, and there was going to be work to do to improve their relationship. She admitted that she could have made more of an effort to get to know him so she decided to ask Taye to stay on for a few days. Though things seemed to be going well for them, Taye soon became defensive again when Remi told him that they'd decided to make the house alcohol free for a while, after the incident with Dex.
