Following the death of his father, Gary, Kyle Canning began attending a grief support group, where he met Jessica Quince. As Kyle spoke about the struggle of being around other people when the grief hit him, Jessica smiled at him and when she found him sitting on the bonnet of her car after the session, she offered him a lift home. As they chatted about the various support groups she'd been to since her mum died a decade earlier, Jessica managed to get Kyle to open up about how guilty he felt about Gary's death, and raised a smile when he told her about how his gran, Sheila, believed that Gary had been reincarnated as a pigeon. As they chatted further, they ended up sharing a kiss, then sleeping together, leaving Roxy Willis heartbroken when she found out, as she and Kyle had a casual relationship but she'd been keeping her distance out of respect over his grief.

Kyle and Jessica then continued to see each other for a couple of weeks, meeting up for breakfast, where he invited her along to the relaunch of the Lassiters Hotel rooftop pool. When Kyle went inside to pay, Roxy decided to go over and have a go at Jessica, claiming that it was about Sheila and Roxy's worries that she wasn't coping and that it wasn't healthy to believe that a pigeon was her son. Unaware of who Roxy was, Jessica was taken aback by the outburst, but Roxy simply said that she worked with Sheila and was concerned that Jessica had been giving her bad advice about coping with her grief. Jessica agreed to have a chat with Sheila and when she did, she was worried that Sheila seemed to be putting a lot of focus on the pigeon, even setting up a camera at home to make sure it didn't disappear. As Jess advised Sheila to make sure she didn't push away her loved ones, Kyle was impressed and continued to see her, with Roxy eventually realising that she had to back off and accept them together. However, after a few weeks seeing Jess, Kyle realised that his heart was with Roxy and he decided to end things with Jess.
