Soon after the opening of retirement complex Eirini Rising, a few of the residents had items go missing and some, including Moira Tohu and Elenora Santoro had their credit cards stolen and used. When it turned out that some students from the neighbouring Erinsborough High were responsible, having made a copy of the master key that joined the two properties, it was decided that more needed to be done to try and form bonds between the elderly residents and the students. A meeting was arranged at Harolds Cafe, attended by Elenora, who had been struggling since the death of her husband, mainly due to her lack of English. When Elenora again struggled to make herself understood as she ordered coffee, student Jasmine Stewart stepped in to help, explaining that she had learnt some Italian from her grandparents. Despite Jasmine being one of the students involved in the recent thefts, she and Elenora soon started getting on well, as Elenora complained about the other residents being old and boring, and used Jasmine to translate as she aired her grievances about life at Eirini Rising.

The following year, when things started being stolen from the school and Eirini Rising again, Jasmine was spotted leaving the building out of school hours and became prime suspect. After seeing Jane and Terese confront Jasmine, Elenora stepped in and told her that she should tell them the truth - that she'd been helping Elenora to win money, gambling with the other residents. Jane was horrified that one of her students would behave so immorally, but Jasmine called her a hypocrite and exposed her own secret - that she'd been secretly sleeping with school cleaner Clint Hendry.

A few months later, with Jasmine not around, Eirini Rising residents' assistant JJ and his girlfriend Nell were perplexed when Elenora walked over and started ranting at them. She was frustrated that, the morning after a big storm, the courtesy bus hadn't arrived and she couldn't go and pick up her prescription. With the language barrier proving difficult, Elenora sarcastically thanked them for nothing and walked away. JJ and Nell then told Jasmine about what had happened, asking her if she could help. After speaking to Elenora, Jasmine explained that she'd been trying to get to the pharmacy as she'd run out of her medication, and that she was worried that it had been taken from her room. As Jasmine told them that it wasn't her daily medication, but the one she took from time to time when she had problems with her lungs, JJ and Nell then relayed this information to Susan and Terese at Eirini Rising. Upon hearing this, Susan realised that Elenora's medication had been stolen by her nephew, Dr Darcy Tyler, who had been working at Eirini, and that he had injected her husband, Karl, with it, making it look like he had suffered a stroke.
