Sergeant Sparks 2022
Occupation: Police Sergeant

As David Tanaka waited to hear his punishment after being charged with the medical manslaughter of Gareth Bateman, he, husband Aaron and their baby daughter Isla took a short holiday. On the last day of the holiday, they were joined by Isla’s mum, Nicolette, who went to their Air B’n’B and met the host, Marlena Tennyson. As they were chatting, and Marlena explained that David, Aaron and Isla were out on a boat, they both noticed a strange smell. When Nicolette then met up with David and Aaron, she explained that there was a plumbing problem at the holiday home, and that Marlena was getting it fixed. Later that day, they returned to find the plumbing almost fixed, and Marlena offered them a late check-out the next morning.

The next morning, David, Aaron, Nicolette and Isla went out on the boat one last time, but when it broke down, they soon realised that there was no phone signal, and that David was going to miss his bail check-in at the local police station. Fortunately, they managed to find some spare fuel and, as they made their way back to the marina, Aaron called the police to let them know what had happened. Back at the holiday home, David picked up his passport on the way to the station, but was surprised when Sergeant Sparks then turned up, having taken their call and wanting to know the full story. Fortunately, he was satisfied that they’d done all they could to make it to the bail check-in, but when they arrived home in Erinsborough, Sergeant Rodwell turned up, explaining that new information had come to light, and that David was now being considered a flight risk. It transpired that Marlena had overheard David joking with Aaron and Nicolette about absconding on the boat and leaving the country, and, having taken him seriously, she’d reported it to the local police. David was then taken away to be held on remand until his sentencing hearing.
