Yasmine 'Yaz' Shields 2024-2025
Siblings: Heath
Occupation: Lighting Event Planner
Following the death of her brother, Heath, Yasmine Shields heard the Crimesborough podcast, in which host Blaze Sagante edited an interview with Holly
Hoyland to suggest that, when she pushed Heath into the water in the outback and he was killed by a crocodile, she had been planning to kill him, rather
than acting in self-defence. Yasmine then left the USA for Erinsborough, claiming that she was there to expand her lighting event company into a new area
and quickly getting to know many of the locals as she looked for sponsors, mentioning to Aaron Brennan that she and her brother had set up the lighting
event company together.
Yaz then continued to quietly investigate what had happened to her brother, approaching Crimesborough owner Blaze about potential publicity for the lighting
event on her podcast. As they chatted, Yaz mentioned the recent episode about Heath's death and whether Blaze believed that Holly was actually guilty of
murder. Blaze then admitted that she felt that there was more to the story than Holly was admitting, leaving Yaz certain that she was doing the right thing
in targetting Holly. When Holly then walked into the cafe and saw Blaze, she confronted her about the editing of their interview and how it had made her look
like a cold-blooded killer, and Yaz looked on as an unapologetic, but clearly surprised, Blaze then walked out. Yaz approached Holly, telling her how impressed
she was with what she'd just seen, leaving Holly feeling like she'd found a new ally.
Later in the day, Yaz watched on again as Holly was confronted by her neighbour, teenager Dex, who blamed her for a recent accident that had left his mum, Cara,
hospitalised. Though Cara felt that she was equally reponsible for the accident, Dex was unable to accept this, particularly when his mum developed sepsis and
had to have a hysterectomy, ending her dream to have another baby. After seeing Holly laughing in the cafe, Dex angrily told her that she was a terrible person,
once again leaving Holly shaken. When Yaz then ordered room service that evening, Holly turned up with the food and Yaz took the opportunity to chat to her again,
saying that she seemed subdued and asking if she needed to talk. When Holly then burst into tears, Yaz told her to sit down and get everything off her chest.
Having managed to get Holly to open up about everything that had happened, Yaz decided to offer her a job as her assistant and, although she was flattered,
Holly said that the hotel owners had been good to her lately and she'd have to stay loyal to them. However, when Holly then grew tired of her co-workers
playing pranks on her and some even refusing to work with her following the Crimesborough stitch-up, she quit the hotel and told Yaz that she'd like to take
up her offer.
As she started to zero in on Holly, Yaz also found herself attracting attention from Nicolette Stone, the manager of Harolds Cafe. Having spotted Yaz on her
many visits to the cafe since her arrival, Nicolette finally had an opportunity to speak to her when the heel on one of her shoes snapped off. Nic quickly
stepped in and offered her own shoes to help out, hopeful that, when she went to collect them from Yaz's hotel room, they might be able to arrange a date.
However, when Nic then went to get the shoes and suggested that they could go for a drink, Yaz was colder than she'd been on their first meeting and said
that she didn't have time for any personal business during her time in Australia. As she closed the door on a disappointed Nicolette, Yaz then returned to
what had left her so distracted and upset - a bag of Heath's belongings that had been returned to her by the police, including a watch she'd given to him.
However, as she chatted to Holly, she found out that Nicolette lived on the same street as her and realised that she might be useful. She then apologised to
Nicolette, claiming that she'd been tired and had received some bad news, and asked if they could still meet for that drink. A delighted Nicolette quickly
agreed and Yaz then attempted to learn more about Holly and the chaos she'd caused whilst living in Erinsborough, which proved difficult as Nic spent most
of the date talking about herself.
As she then started to avoid Nicolette again, Yaz focussed on Heath's phone, hiring IT specialist Jeffrey Swan to access it and see what he could find. He
soon showed her a video that was recorded on the phone, only hours before Heath's death, which he had made for his sister, telling her that Holly had gone
crazy and he was frightened of what she was going to do to him. Yaz took the video to Superintendent Duncan Hayes, who told her that it wasn't enough to get
the case reopened, as everyone who had been there, including Heath's accomplice Tess Carmichael, had corroborated Holly's version of events. A deeply
frustrated Yaz started becoming irritated with an oblivious Holly as she tried to work out what to do next. Deciding that she would need to speak to Tess,
she arranged a prison visit where she claimed to be lawyer Leah Curtain, who was representing Heath's family. She explained that the family didn't accept
what had happened, not believing that Heath could have tried to kill anyone and that they were certain that Holly had been after Heath's money and that
everyone else was covering for her. She offered to help Tess if she agreed to change her statement and speak out against Holly but, not wanting to revisit
the whole thing, Tess instead contacted Krista Sinclair and warned her what was going on, before she went to tell Holly.
Meanwhile, Yaz agreed to go on another date with Nicolette and the pair shared a picnic in the park, which proved to be a good distraction for Yaz as she
became more obsessed with proving Holly's guilt. Having heard from Tess's lawyer that she didn't want to pursue the matter, Yaz found a new angle when Holly
casually mentioned that she'd been attending counselling sessions with local counsellor Rhonda Del Rubio.
As she attended an open mic event at the Lassiters Piano Bar, Yaz became upset when Nicolette started singing 'O Holy Night' and quickly left. When Nic went
to her room to check on her, she admitted that it was a carol that she and her brother used to sing for their parents on Christmas Eve, explaining that he
had died recently and, although they hadn't been speaking for a while, she was struggling deeply with her grief. As the evening went on, the pair ended up
sleeping together, but a throwaway comment from Nic, about how Yaz should find a counsellor that she could open up to, got her thinking. Yaz then disappeared
in the night, breaking into Rhonda's office and taking photos of the notes in Holly's file, hoping to find a way to use them against her. When Nic then woke
up and found herself alone, she waited for a while, but was left believing that Yaz regretted sleeping with her and was waiting for her to leave to avoid any
awkwardness.
As she continued to be forced to work with Holly on the Lights Up event, Yaz struggled to hide her hatred for her, constantly snapping at her and being rude,
leaving Holly very confused about the dramatic mood swings. As she went through the notes and found out that Holly was hyper-materialistic due to her
upbringing, she came up with an idea and went through Heath's phone, finding a message in which Holly told him about some of the things he could buy for her,
including a perfume called Scent by Zelda. Yaz arranged for a bottle of the perfume, along with a note claiming to be from Heath, to be delivered to Holly on
Christmas Day, whilst also trying to fix things with Nicolette. As Nic turned up at Yaz's hotel room, wanting to know if she regretted their night together,
Yaz insisted that she'd just gone for a late-night run to clear her head, and had absolutely no regrets. It seemed that they'd patched things up, and Nic
invited Yaz to a Christmas gathering being held at Paul's penthouse, but when Yaz realised that Holly was on her way there too, she suddenly changed her
mind. She sent Nic a message, claiming that she was unwell, but when Nic later went to her hotel room to check on her, and found that she was perfectly
fine, she said that it was a horrible way to treat someone who'd been nothing but nice to her.
Fully aware of the state she was going to find her in, Yaz then went to visit Holly with a Christmas gift, quickly feigning concern as she was deeply
distressed after receiving perfume and a note from Heath. Yaz suggested that it might be good for Holly to open up about everything that had happened with
Heath, but as Holly spoke about it, she suddenly clammed up at an important moment, leaving Yaz none the wiser about what had actually happened to her
brother. The following day, Holly decided to donate the perfume to the Sonya Rebecchi Foundation, but was distressed when Yaz's lighting technician,
Kendall, arrived for their first meeting wearing the perfume, having bought it from the foundation. When Holly then also managed to damage some expensive
equipment, she was surprised when Yaz brushed it off. She then suggested that Holly's reaction to smelling the perfume was strange and again tried to get
her to open up about what had happened in the outback. Their conversation was interrupted by Nicolette, who had realised that she might have been too hard
on Yaz, as she'd clearly been struggling during the first Christmas without her brother.
As Yaz started to open up to Nic a little more, she explained that her family believed that her brother might have been murdered, but they were finding it
difficult to prove it. Nicolette sympathised as Yaz admitted that she'd been having some dark thoughts about revenge and doing things she never thought she
was capable of. Nic admitted that she'd go to any lengths to find out the truth if it were her brother, causing Yaz to come up with a new way to torment
Holly. After seeing that Holly had left her keys behind, Yaz used them to access 28 Ramsay Street and hides cameras and audio equipment. That evening, she
played Heath's voice into the house and watched as Holly screamed out in horror, fearing that she was losing her mind. After watching Holly break down, Yaz phoned her, before going to the house. With Holly in the back garden trying to escape the voices she'd been hearing,
Yaz took the opportunity to remove the hidden camera and speakers from inside the house, before joining Holly, claiming that she'd sounded very upset on
the phone. As Holly explained what had happened, Yaz started giving her alcohol, claiming that it would calm her nerves, and asking her why she would have
been hearing Heath's voice, asking if there was something she felt guilty about. As she pushed Holly and asked leading questions, Yaz finally managed to
record her admitting that she'd wanted Heath to die.
Yaz then took this recording to Superintendent Hayes, who told her that it wasn't enough to reopen the case, pointing out that it was illegal to record
someone without their consent - and that Holly was clearly inebriated and was being asked leading questions. A furious Yaz accused him of being incompetent,
at which point she was warned that, if she didn't drop the issue, she'd be facing criminal charges of her own. As Yaz found a distraction, arranging to have
dinner with Nic and meet her daughter, Isla, she made the sudden decision to fly out to Warrawee, the cattle station in Queensland where Heath had died.
Claiming that she was looking at new locations for light shows so she could stay longer in Australia, Yaz apologised to Nic and left her colleagues confused
as she disappeared with only a couple of days before Erinsborough Lights Up was due to take place.
Having found nothing at Warrawee, an increasingly desperate Yaz returned to Erinsborough where she soon bumped into Nicolette. She apologised for her
behaviour and they arranged to meet for brunch the following morning instead. With the police still refusing to reopen the case, Yaz turned up on Ramsay
Street the next morning, noticing smoke coming from Holly's back garden. She found Holly doing a purging ritual recommended by Rhonda, burning photos of
all of the men who'd hurt her. Seeing Holly burning a picture of Heath proved too much for Yaz and she fled, missing the brunch in the process. When
Nicolette caught up with her, Yaz tried to apologise and asked if she could explain everything, but Nic had had enough and said that neither she nor
Isla deserved to keep being let down. Devastated as Nic ended things between them for good, Yaz finally snapped. Having been given a damaged transformer
earlier that day by Kendall, who described it as a potential death trap if it was used, Yaz handed it to Holly, telling her to use it for the main
lighting display later that day, fully aware that it would give Holly an electric shock that could kill her.
