When Kate Ramsay's ex-boyfriend Mark Brennan returned to town, she was already struggling with her break-up from Kyle Canning - wrongly believing that he'd ended things because she couldn't have children. Not quite ready to contemplate another relationship, Kate made it clear to Brennan that she didn't want him around, even when he heard about the break-up with Kyle and told her that he just wanted to be there as a friend for her. When Kate started getting hassled by a guy, James, at Charlie's one evening, Brennan turned up and warned him off, but rather than thank him, Kate again told him that she didn't need him popping up in her life all the time and had no interest in spending time with him.
