With Tyler Brennan awaiting trial for the murder of Hamish Roche, he was approached by a man named Adrian Snyder. Adrian was acting on behalf of Philip Banks, a man in prison who wanted help to find out if his wife, Verity, was cheating on him. If Tyler agreed to try to seduce Verity whilst she was staying in Erinsborough, Philip would offer protection to Tyler if he ended up in prison. Tyler initially agreed to the plan, but after meeting Verity, he realised that she knew what her husband was up to, and that Tyler's brother, Mark, had been the police officer responsible for Philip going to prison. Now aware that things were personal for him, Tyler backed off, but soon started receiving threats against his family and his girlfriend, Piper Willis. One afternoon, Xanthe Canning and Ben Kirk found Piper's cat, Clementine, lying in the middle of Ramsay Street, foaming at the mouth and with a note aimed at Tyler. They rushed the cat to vet Sarah Whelan, who treated her and told them that she'd pumped Clementine's stomach, suspecting that she's ingested a toxin, but would make a full recovery. After seeing the bill for $900, Ben and Xanthe realised that they'd need help from Piper's mum, Terese, who was horrified to find out about the situation Tyler was in.
