Back in 1995, Susan Kennedy and student Brett Stark visited Kenya after he won an essay-writing competition. In 1999, Libby Kennedy decided to visit the country and bought tickets for her and fiance Drew Kirk, but the plans fell through when he decided to become a partner at Carpenter's Mechanics instead. In 2003, Karl Kennedy hired Cameron Hodder, a doctor who dated Libby and had been working for the Red Cross in Africa, treating children with AIDS.

Also, Lucy Robinson had a penpal in Africa, while Dorothy Burke had spent time travelling on the continent, bringing back numerous artifacts with her.
