Born in 1926 in England, Ernie Bourne had a long and varied career in showbusiness, prior to joining the Neighbours cast in 1987 as opinionated mechanic Rob Lewis. His other roles included Mervin Pringle in Prisoner Cell Block H, Fester Fumble in Adventure Island and numerous guest roles in series such as Division 4, Matlock Police, Carson’s Law and Good Guys, Bad Guys. His film credits include Quigley Down Under and Gallipoli whilst on stage he appeared in plays and musicals, including Beauty And The Beast, Fiddler On The Roof and Guys And Dolls, to name just a few.
Ernie’s most recent work included a 2003 guest role in Blue Heelers, and the part of Mr Shumacher in the Australian stage production of Dirty Dancing.
His daughter, Sally Bourne, followed him into acting, appearing in shows including Prisoner: Cell Block H and The Sullivans and a variety of musical roles.
Ernie passed away ‘from old age’ on January 21st, 2009, aged 82, at The Alfred Hospital, Prahran, Melbourne.
