Born 18th October 1969 in Woomera, South Australia, Josef Brown enrolled in the McDonald College of the Arts in Sydney when he was sixteen - where he developed
an interest in classical ballet - and, in 1991, joined the Australian Ballet School in Melbourne. He was promoted to Soloist in 1994, and his Principal roles with the company included Onegin, Anna Karenina,
The Nutcracker and Le Concours. In 1996, he joined Modern Dans Topluluguu in Ankara, Turkey, where he remained for a year before returning to Australia and joining the Sydney Dance Company. Brown continued to
perform and choreograph for the Sydney Dance Company for seven years, leaving in 2004.
In November 2004, Josef appeared as Johnny Castle, the male lead, in the world premiere musical production of Dirty Dancing in Sydney, opposite Neighbours actress Kym Valentine as Baby. He won the Outstanding Performance
in a Stage Musical award at the 2005 Australian Dance Awards, and continued to play Johnny in productions across the world, including the UK and USA. In 2010, Josef appeared in the television series Dance Academy as dance
instructor Patrick, and went on to make guest appearances in Rake and Home & Away, as well as playing Auctus in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. In May 2012, he appeared as Charlie in the Sydney production of the musical
An Officer and a Gentleman and in November of that year, it was announced that he had joined the cast of Neighbours in the regular role of Matt Turner, a police sergeant and head of the show's newest family.
Josef is married to fellow dancer Katherine Griffiths, and they have two children.
