Marcia Hines Singer
Marcia Hines 2007
As Frazer Yeats gave Karl Kennedy a lift to the Triple E radio station, where Karl planned to submit a CD in their Undiscovered contest, the taxi suffered a flat tyre. As Frazer changed it, Karl put his CD in the player, much to Frazer’s horror, and it then got stuck, with Karl unable to remove it as they arrived at the radio station. As they argued over it, Australian Idol judge Marcia Hines walked out and hired Frazer’s taxi for a lift into the city. Karl promptly decided to join her, hoping that she’d be impressed with his music, which was still stuck in the player. However, as they dropped Marcia off, she admitted to Karl that she found his music ‘nasty’ before walking over, removing the CD and handing it to him. An eternally grateful Frazer gave her the ride on the house, while Karl’s musical ambitions were once again shattered.
Born July 20th 1953 in New England, USA, Marcia Hines was discovered at the age of 16 by Harry M Miller, who flew her out to Australia to appear in a stage production of Hair. She went on to become the first black woman to play Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, before landing a record contract and having several top 40 hits in the late 1970s, including the number 2 single You. She has since released some singles, including duets with her daughter, Deni, who also had a brief pop career. In 2003, Marcia became one of the judges on talent search Australian Idol, which led to a revival of her music career and several new albums.
