Iranian-born Alin Sumarwata began filming with Neighbours in December 2011, in the regular role of Italian chef Vanessa Villante. She had previously appeared in television series including Tangle, Sea Patrol, Rescue Special Ops and Home and Away, as well as the 2009 short film Dark Horse, which saw her win 'Best Female Actor in a Short Film' at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival.

In 2011, Alin married Australian actor Don Hany, with whom she had previously appeared in East West 101 She gave birth to their daughter Tilda later that year, two months before the family relocated to Melbourne, from Sydney, in order for Alin to take up her role on Neighbours.
