Actor, Cameo & Crew Profiles > Cameo Profiles > Michael Whitney Cricketer

Michael Whitney 1994

When teacher Wayne Duncan announced that he was leaving Erinsborough High for pastures new, Brett Stark and Michael Martin were disappointed to be losing the school cricket coach so early in the season. Wayne assured them that he had to make a clean break from the school, but would line up a good replacement. The boys were pleased, especially when it seemed that the new coach was someone famous, but they were still amazed when Michael Whitney entered the sports centre with Wayne. After helping Brett to get some confidence in his own cricketing abilities, Michael, along with Wayne and the team, headed to Lassiter’s. Michael was delighted to see Cheryl Stark there, and it emerged that she was an old flame of his, having run his favourite pub many years ago. With his short stint in Erinsborough over, Michael agreed to answer a few questions and do a few signings, but found his time dominated by cricket-obsessed Brett, who reeled off statistics and asked Michael to sign his autograph book, cap and cricket bat.

Michael Whitney was born in New South Wales in 1959. He played in 12 tests and 38 One Day Internationals during his cricketing career, which spanned from 1981 until 1993. He became popular amongst cricket fans due to his sense of humour, which led to him having a successful media career, including his Neighbours appearance, following his retirement from cricket in 1993. In more recent years, he has hosted Who Dares Wins, been a judge on the Australian series of Gladiators and hosted Sydney Weekender.
