Charlie Hoyland
As with most soap births, little Charlie Hoyland’s life had been action-packed before he even left the womb. Steph and Max Hoyland had suffered with problems conceiving, due to her chemotherapy a couple of years earlier and his low sperm count. After narrowly missing out on adopting a baby, and almost giving up hope, Steph found out that she was pregnant. But, during the pregnancy, Steph found another breast lump and was diagnosed with cancer for a second time. The pregnancy still had a few months to go, but she declined treatment, not wanting to risk harming her ‘miracle baby’ named Charlie after his late great-grandfather. A horrified Max tried to have Steph declared mentally incompetent so he could take over her medical decisions, but this only led to the breakdown of their marriage. When baby Charlie did finally arrive, Max was visiting his sick daughter, Summer, in Fiji, but they made it back just in time to help Steph through the delivery, before she was rushed off for an operation to remove her tumour. A few months of radiotherapy followed, but Steph survived to see her little boy grow up.

Pepper Steiger & Frazer Yeats
When Toadie Rebecchi left Ned Parker in charge of finding new tenants for number 30, the first two applicants were young engaged couple Heidi (nicknamed Pepper due to her habit of sneezing when nervous) and Frazer. Although they won themselves a room, it quickly became evident that all wasn’t quite as it seemed – their relationship was a ruse. Pepper had been thrown out of several share houses already and had decided that being part of a respectable couple might help her this time, while Frazer had a plan of his own. His familiarity with new housemate Rosetta Cammeniti raised suspicions and, while the truth was finally revealed about the sham engagement, it would be a few more weeks before Rosie found out that Frazer had known of her existence and had followed her to Ramsay Street.

First Words: (Frazer) “Spit out your chewie… first impressions are important.” (Pepper) “Y’know, you could have mentioned you were a control freak before you agreed to go through with this.”

Will Griggs
Mysterious Will Griggs turned up to view a room at number 30, complete with backpack and claiming to have just returned after backpacking around Asia. Although there were holes in his story, he quickly covered and Katya Kinski decided that he was worthy of one of the rooms. As with Pepper and Frazer, all wasn’t quite as it seemed with Will and it later turned out that he was actually Sebastian Barnes, heir to a multi-million dollar hotel empire, something that he managed to keep from girlfriend Carmella Cammeniti for three months, before disappearing into the night when she finally found out the truth.

First Words: “So I backpacked around India for a few months, then went down to Nepal and finished up in Tibet, it was amazing.”

Rosetta Cammeniti
Sister to ex-nun Carmella, already resident at 24 Ramsay Street, trainee lawyer Rosetta turned up to view Toadie’s old room at number 30, after becoming an article clerk at Tim Collins & Associates, the law firm where Toadie had worked. Intense workaholic Rosie almost missed out on the room, as Will had already been offered it, but Frazer talked Ned into putting Will in the box room, so Rosie could stay. This act of kindness wasn’t random, however, as Frazer knew who Rosie was and where she had come from. Frazer had left home as a teenager and changed his name, but kept up with family news and knew that his older brother, Johnny, was engaged to Rosie, a member of the influential Cammeniti family. After finding out that Rosie and Johnny had split up, Frazer had tracked her down, hoping to win her over and marry into the family himself. But the plan quickly went awry as he found himself falling in love with her for real and was forced to keep his secret, or risk losing her completely.

Kerry Mangel
The birth of baby Kerry – named after her late grandmother – was the culmination of a terrible nine months for Sky Mangel. Having cheated on her boyfriend, Dylan Timmins, with her art lecturer, JP, Sky had been dumped. She then had a one-night stand with Dylan’s younger brother, Stingray, before finding herself pregnant. Deciding that the pregnancy was too far along to be Stingray’s, and knowing that JP was infertile, Sky broke the news to Dylan and the pair gradually got back together. But, during a check-up, Dr Karl Kennedy mentioned that the baby was very small and the dates didn’t add up, leaving Sky believing that Stingray was the dad. Unable to cope with the guilt as Dylan proposed, Sky ended up back in hospital and, when the truth came out, it ripped the Timmins family apart, with Stingray unable to cope with impending fatherhood and descending into alcoholism. Sky, meanwhile, found herself in hospital with Teresa Cammeniti, who had given up her own baby the year before and was obsessed with getting Sky’s child. Stuck in hospital and desperately confused, Sky went off to find Stingray, but instead found Dylan in a hotel room with her best friend, Elle. The shock sent her into labour and Teresa, desperate to see the child but banned from the ward, set the entire hospital block on fire. Later, as Sky went to see her baby in another wing of the hospital, the crib was empty. Although Teresa was found pushing an empty pram around the suburb, it had actually been Stingray who took the baby, believing her to be his to take. He had then passed out in the bushes, where he was found by Dylan, who instinctively took the child, admitting to Elle that he had a feeling that she was his daughter – something which a DNA test later proved.
