A breakdown for one young resident kicked off a dramatic week of separations, revelations and operations…

Boyd’s strange behaviour finally reached epic proportions this week. Having promised Summer a huge surprise, he dragged her off to the bush where he told her that their mother would be coming to visit them. Summer was understandably shocked by this, but quickly realised how unstable Boyd was, and tried to go along with him. However, he became distressed and ran off, with Summer giving chase and eventually finding him curled up in a ball on the ground. After getting him home, the family contacted Karl and Boyd was taken off to hospital for a consultation with Jeremy Levi. Boyd was then diagnosed with adolescent schizophrenia and admitted to the psychiatric ward of the hospital. Steph, Summer and Sky were distressed to witness Boyd’s erratic mood swings and confusion, as he clung on to the belief that there was nothing wrong with him and he shouldn’t be in hospital. Things grew particularly moving as Boyd started to believe that his father, Max, had fallen from a building and died, an outburst which was witnessed by Steph. Spending time with Sky also led to some high emotions when he started to believe that she was in fact Serena, and shared details of their brief relationship just before Christmas…

Sky’s distress at learning about her cousin’s affair with her boyfriend was compounded as Serena struggled to deny it, or even to justify her actions. The argument spilled out into Ramsay Street, where a sunbathing Janae overheard everything and confronted Serena, before introducing herself. Of course, Janae couldn’t resist telling her brother what his girlfriend had got up to and he went straight to number 22, where the Bishops were staying after number 24 had been vandalised, to confront her. After a few tears and lots of apologies, Stingray realised that he didn’t want to lose Serena over something that had happened so long ago, when they weren’t even a couple. Later on, however, Janae wasn’t about to let the “cheatin' mole” get the better of her boyfriend and delivered Serena with a slap. Sky, meanwhile, struggled to find anyone to turn to, but ended up in Dylan’s car, where the couple shared a heart-to-heart and later, a kiss. Although Sky ran off, feeling extremely guilty, what she didn’t realise was that earlier in the week, Dylan had been behind the destruction of number 24 after his hatred towards David got out of hand… Despite all of the criticism levelled at Neighbours’ younger actors over the years, this week proved that they can really deliver when they’re required to. Dramatic scenes involving Kyal Marsh and Marisa Siketa were particularly impressive but as the Boyd/Serena revelations came out, Stephanie McIntosh, Lara Sacher, Ben Nicholas and Eliza Taylor-Cotter also managed to hold their own.

Stuart finally had his operation this week and Sindi was relieved when it was a complete success and his sight was restored. However, he quickly realised that something wasn’t quite right when he witnessed the furtive glances between Sindi and Susan’s new boyfriend, Gary Evans. Sindi had already met Gary and tried to convince him to dump Susan before she found out the truth, but he told her that he’d told Susan everything… except the identity of the escort he’d planned to sleep with. Stuart told her to give it another try, as there would be no future for Gary and Susan if she were to find out the truth. Although Gary saw her point, he was unimpressed to learn that the money he gave to Sindi hadn’t been used for Stu’s operation and it seemed that he wasn’t too willing to do her any favours in return. And so the messy situation goes on.

Elsewhere, Carmella was trying, and failing, to come to terms with her feelings of resentment towards Connor. A counselling session with Karl made her realise that she needed some time on her own. Coincidentally, Eva, having received compensation from the club who’d wrongfully dismissed her, got some more good news when she was offered a place on a wrestling tour of Australia. Carmella saw her chance and agreed to accompany Eva as her publicist. The sudden departure of their girlfriends left Toadie and Connor devastated, but some house of trouser therapy (that’s drinking and urinating in the garden to the rest of us) soon restored their spirits. It was just a shame that we had to sit and watch it detract somewhat from the rest of this week’s excellent stories and performances.

Finally this week, Lyn found herself at odds with Janelle over their different styles of parenting, as the Timmins kids faced up to various problems and Janelle insisted on leaving them to it. Elsewhere, Lyn found herself in an embarrassing situation when she left her dry cleaning at the General Store and later caught Lou cleaning her underwear on his veranda, in an attempt to save money. And Karl and Izzy looked like they were on the road to reconciliation after a pleasant night out together led them back to his flat, where he asked her to stay the night…

Notes: A scene from Monday’s episode, involving Dylan trashing number 24 with a golf club, was edited down for its UK broadcast.
