A couple of new faces and the unveiling of the new Lassiter’s complex kept the neighbours busy this week…

The new Lassiter’s complex finally opened this week, comprising the hotel, legal practice, surgery and salon, as well as Izzy and Max’s Scarlet Bar and Lou and Harold’s General Store. The event marked the 20th anniversary of the opening of the hotel, a date particularly apt in the 20th anniversary year of the series. Despite the festivities, it wasn’t long before the appropriately-named Scarlet Bar was at the centre of some underhand dealings…

Whilst trying to repair her relationship with Karl, Izzy was also busy trying to find evidence to destroy Paul Robinson. He, on the other hand, was more concerned with trying to win over Liljana, who was contemplating returning to her ex-husband, David. The beginning of the week saw Izzy finally collect enough evidence to prove that Paul was plotting against the people of Erinsborough, so she sent it off to her solicitor for safe-keeping. Paul, meanwhile, was getting closer and closer to Lil. As that couple grew closer, Lil realised that she couldn’t embark on a new relationship without resolving her marriage to David. By the end of the week, things seemed to be falling apart around Paul’s ears, as both his personal and professional lives were shaken. Having realised that someone matching Izzy’s description had been snooping into his affairs, Paul confronted her. He was shocked to realise that she knew everything and had covered her tracks extremely well. The only way to buy her silence was to cancel the debt that she owed him for the bar and to promise not to do anything that would jeopardise the livelihoods of her family. As Paul angrily came to terms with this, Lil was busy talking to David and she shocked Paul by announcing her intention to give her marriage another try.

Elsewhere, it was a relief to find some less complex relationships, as the Timmins family spoke their minds to each other. Having been given the apprentice job at the salon, Janelle was determined to reunite her family and make a fresh start. Although Stingray agreed to move into number 26, Dylan took a little more persuading. However, after the three of them spent a morning hunting through the hard rubbish in Eden Hills, Dylan and Janelle managed to patch up their differences. Soon after, the two Timmins daughters made their entrance. Having been thrown off a bus for being too rowdy, youngest daughter Bree managed to get them a lift by claiming that their brothers – siamese twins – would be needing an operation and they had to get to Erinsborough. Once in Ramsay Street, her sister, Janae, soon attracted attention by shouting in the middle of the street, unsure which house her family were residing in. Reunited with their mother and brothers, the girls quickly found their way around the neighbourhood to the General Store, where Janae distracted Harold while Bree shoplifted half his stock. Back at number 26, the Timmins family sat down for a family meal – possibly the one and only time we’ll see them do this – and quickly sent up the values of the entire programme as they laughed about the friendly atmosphere in Ramsay Street. But now the family’s all here, it’s looking like they might just succumb to the Erinsborough way of life. Eventually.

Susan found herself an unexpected new love interest this week, when she joined a yoga class and got close to Gary Evans, another new student. The two got on extremely well, but as with most soap opera relationships, thing looked doomed as Gary was in fact the man who’d, only the week before, attempted to pay Sindi for one night together – a secret which will surely be revealed to Susan at the most inappropriate moment. Lyn, meanwhile, seemed to have finally found happiness with Andy but, of course, he had a secret of his own. After spending a pleasant day together, Lyn was stunned when Andy’s wife, Sandy, turned up with their two children in tow. Since Andy had previously mentioned that he had no children, Lyn promptly threw him out of the house. After a night of deliberation, as well as conflicting advice from Janelle and Susan, Lyn met with Andy at the General Store and told him that she could no longer see him, as their values were just too different. After years of seeing both characters as married women, it’s nice to see Susan and Lyn involved in romantic entanglements and stories which are usually reserved for the younger characters.

Eva was left angry when she overheard Toadie’s boss, Tim, describing her as a beached whale and advising his colleague to dump her. However, she showed a different side to herself when she sang at the grand opening of The Scarlet Bar and soon won Tim over. However, an audition for a regular gig at a jazz club turned to disaster when she was deemed too fat, but Toadie vowed to fight the club over their discrimination. Despite her best efforts, Carmella was still struggling to return her life to normal, while Boyd was showing some worrying signs of mental illness as he began chatting to people who weren’t even in the room with him. Realising that something was seriously wrong, he looked on the internet for some answers and came to the shocking conclusion that he was suffering from schizophrenia…
