Sex, drugs and rock and roll took its toll on one neighbours, whilst love and lust was at the centre of most of the others’ lives this week, too…

Jack’s all night clubbing binges took their toll on him, and he finally put his life in danger when he lost his concentration and was left dangling by his foot from the top of a ladder. Despite the building site being empty at the time, he was quickly saved by the arrival of his work colleagues. Despite his protestations, Karl suspected Jack was using drugs, and Lyn sensed Karl’s worry. Later in the week his lack of commitment to his work reared its head again when the building site’s store pod was robbed of thousands of dollars worth of tools. Jack, being responsible for locking it up, was blamed, and Lyn lost her temper with her son. It was therefore a welcome relief for Jack when Olivia handed him a thousand dollars in cash, out of the blue, to help him out for a while. Perhaps what was most shocking about Karl’s questioning of Jack about drug use was that there have been no actual scenes of Jack taking drugs nor talking about them so far. Whether this was deliberate so that the audience could interpret the truth as they saw fit (as in the case of Sarah’s sexual harassment and Karl’s affair) or as a conscious decision because of the timeslot is unclear.

The teens of Ramsay Street got all nervous mid-week when the parents’ evening took place at the school. Despite the other kids cursing the opportunity for their teachers to spill all to their elders, Stingray felt sadness at having no parents in town to represent him at the school. When this was brought to Toadie’s attention, he decided that he and Sindi would play parents to Scott. However, Stingray was a little embarrassed by Sindi’s choice of formal attire for the evening! Serena and Boyd were both disappointed by their teachers’ commentaries, whilst Sky even took to arguing with hers about the choice of reading material available. This wasn’t the only arguing Sky was contributing to this week, either! Serena and Scott weren’t at all impressed with her attempts at modern art work when she built a display of red plastic boxes at Lassiter’s Complex. It seemed the visitors to the resort weren’t convinced either, and it took an undercover act of graffiti by Stingray for the work to be accepted as art when he scrawled “B.Y.O. Meaning” on the boxes. Despite Sky’s relief at her work not being ridiculed anymore thanks to his addition, she was furious that her limelight had been stolen by her rival – at least in the eyes of the few who knew the real modifier of the work. However, as Serena was arguing with Sky for having denied Scott the chance of the arts grant, Sky was arguing with her cousin for deliberately changing her dress and appearance to that of a ‘bogan’ to appeal to Scott!

Life for Susan Kennedy continued to be so very complicated, too, as she fought her family and friends for the right to feel love for Father Tom. When Lyn discovered that Susan had not been upfront about her relationship with him to her, she was furious and stormed off after a heated row. It took the mediating efforts of Liljana to bring the two together to talk it through calmly. However, Susan wasn’t prepared for Tom’s verger and house-keeper, Therese, to confront her about the relationship, and confessed to having been in the same situation with Tom in the past. Susan was left gobsmacked, and despite talking through Therese’s admission with the Father, she didn’t feel secure in a relationship with so much against it, and revealed to Tom that they were finished. This storyline continues to impress. What began as the storyline of Karl and Izzy, with Susan very much the victim, has now transformed into her getting one-up on her ex-husband by not only forming a new relationship, but a forbidden one at that.

Darren and Libby’s re-acquaintance continued to be an affair of stubbornness on both parts. Libby agreed to meet her new online-chat buddy, not knowing that it was really Darren in disguise. However, when Libby organised to meet her blind date at the Coffee Shop, she didn’t bank on, nor appreciate, the arrival of Darren, who jokingly mocked her for waiting in hope of this stranger arriving. It wasn’t until Libby put two and two together and realised that Darren knew more about this ‘stranger’ than she had let on, that she followed him to the pub to discover him writing an email to Libby as ‘Adam’.

Elsewhere, Summer and Lisa continued their rebellious streak by wagging school and getting caught by Karl who later told Max. They also took to casting a spell on Declan, so that he would no longer feel affection towards Summer. Lou’s birthday arrived, quite by surprise to the majority of residents who had forgotten. It took a phone call from Lauren to remind them and they quickly organised a surprise party in the garden on No.22 for him. However, with his court case for horse fixing looming, and the war to win Best Pub in Erinsborough, Lou had little spare time or thought for celebrating. Lou’s birthday bash, however, was a true example of the “Neighbours spirit” at its best, with nearly all the residents being at the party, even if they had little else to do in the rest of the episode, as well as the pleasing fact for long-term fans that Lauren was involved in the birthday, if only indirectly. And finally, Stephanie’s hopes that she may have been pregnant fell through when her period finally occurred days overdue. She was upset that again she had been led to believe she may be expecting. She wasn’t best pleased, either, when Lyn continued doing what she does best, by interfering in the wedding preparations even more!

Notes: The final moments of the closing credits sequence were finally updated this week to replace the four-year old images of the hedge-line and swimming pool, originally designed for the year 2000 titles sequence! The new frame which accompanies the copyright caption now features still images of Lassiter’s, Ramsay Street and the trees and pool in the same geometric arrangement and colour filters as the rest of the closing sequence.
