Magic Moments > 2008 > Harold and Valda's Departure Episode 5420

Written by Anthony Morris, Directed by Jet Wilkinson, Produced by Peter Dodds

Channel Ten: 28/03/08, Five: 18/06/08

Rachel bumps into Ty at the bar during the all-ages gig. Mickey collects money from the neighbours for Harold’s going away party. Oliver tells Marco that he’s stopping Celestial Fruits’ contract with Lassiter’s. Libby and Dan catch Ringo and Declan about to leave the gig with a bottle of alcohol.

At the school, Dan and Libby have summoned Frazer and Rebecca, who are furious that Ringo and Declan have once again broken their trust. Declan refuses to see what the problem is, which only makes Rebecca more annoyed with him.

..

At the General Store, Lou is in the kitchen with Mickey and Ben, counting the money they’ve collected from the locals for Harold’s going away party. Harold then comes in, and Lou claims that he’s started another of his money-making schemes. Harold pretends to be annoyed, asking if it’s another distillery, and they argue, with Harold saying that Lou will probably have better things to do than wave him off when he leaves, then smiling to himself as he leaves the kitchen. Lou explains to Mickey and Lou that he and Harold were just mucking around and didn’t really mean it. He says that you don’t stop being friends with someone just because they’re not around, and Mickey reminds him that you still miss them.

At Charlie’s, Carmella is shocked to open a letter and find a business class return ticket to Rome, from her family, who want to meet Chloe. She’s thrilled, but realises that Marco can’t come with her, as they really can’t afford it.

..

At the school, Rachel, Zeke, Didge and Taylah are standing outside the classroom, trying to listen in. Rachel is annoyed that Declan and Ringo blew it for all of them after they had to try so hard to get permission, but doesn’t want to see them in too much trouble. Taylah asks Rachel what she thought of Ty, and Rachel says that he was pretty good on the guitar. Taylah is more interested in whether Rachel thinks Ty is hot, but as Rachel tries to explain that she’s not interested, they’re all surprised to see Steve and Miranda appear in their cleaning gear. Bridget is surprised but, when Taylah asks her, claims that she knew all along that her parents were cleaners.

At the law firm, Rebecca tells Declan that he’s grounded – he can go to school and go to work with her, but the rest of the time, he’s staying at home.

..

At number 30, Ringo has been given chores to do, but claims that he doesn’t know how to iron. Frazer points out that they put their trust in him, and he let them down.

Back at the law firm, Declan apologises for letting his mum down, but she wants to know why he did it in the first place. Oliver wonders if he was doing it to impress a girl, but Declan says it was just a stupid, spur of the moment decision.

..

At number 30, Dan is also wondering if Ringo bought the alcohol to impress a girl, but Ringo thinks that’s stupid. Frazer asks his brother if he’s having trouble coping with everything that’s happened recently – his eating disorder and Jessica’s death – but Ringo insists he’s fine, though he is under a lot of pressure at school. Dan and Frazer sarcastically tell him that to cope with the sort of pressure, he needs to study – which is an ideal activity to be undertaken whilst grounded. Ringo’s face drops.

At the law firm, Rebecca is wondering whether Declan is rebelling due to Richard’s death. Declan is becoming slightly tired of being psychoanalysed and says that he made a mistake and owned up to it – isn’t that the adult thing to do? Rebecca agrees, but still wants to know why he did it in the first place. Oliver goes to get them some dinner, as Rebecca continues to badger her other son.

..

At the bar, Lou is on the phone to Karl, trying to sort out the last few party details, when Harold comes in and smirks as Lou quickly hangs up, claiming it was a business deal. Harold invites Lou over for a final dinner that evening, but Lou says that he has a prior engagement. They’re joined by Valda, who tells Lou that he has until the next morning to declare his intentions, otherwise she’s going. Lou promptly leaves, and Harold tells Valda that it’s all a front – she says that she knows that, which makes it all the more frustrating. Harold tells her to find someone better, and leaves, offering Carmella and Marco a house tour later that night. They thank him and get back to discussing the trip to Rome, just as Oliver comes in and overhears them – he says that Carmella can go wherever she likes, but she’s not taking Chloe out of the country.

Later, Marco and Oliver are preparing for an argument, with Marco furious that Oliver is implying that Carmella would disappear with her daughter. Oliver says that it’s fine if Carmella needs a break from all the arguing, but she’s not taking Chloe. Marco accuses Oliver of being paranoid, with Oliver replying that Marco might know how he felt if he could have kids of his own. Sensing that things are about to get violent, Steph steps in and tells them to take it outside. Oliver agrees to this, but Carmella angrily tells him to leave. Once he’s gone, Carmella tells Marco that he was an idiot too and that she doesn’t need protecting – it’s her life and she’ll decide how she lives it.

..

At number 26, Didge asks Steve and Miranda if they have any more secrets to share. They apologise for not telling her, and she explains that she wasn’t embarrassed about them working as cleaners, but she doesn’t understand why they kept it quiet for so long, as she wouldn’t have minded missing out on school camp if money was tight. Steve says that money isn’t a problem, they’re just working extra jobs so they can afford some little luxuries.

At number 28, Lou is collecting money for the party. After Karl puts $50 in the tin, Susan grabs his wallet and adds an extra 50. Karl is annoyed and bickers with Susan, while, on the sofa, Taylah is trying to convince Rachel to take someone to Harold’s party, in another thinly-veiled attempt to hook her up with Ty. Rachel walks off, saying she’s not interested, and Taylah admits to Zeke that she’s already given Rachel’s number to Ty.

..

At number 24, Harold has finished showing the house, and some of its quirks, to Marco, who offers to fix things. Harold says that he’d rather he didn’t, as it’s quite comforting, like having an old friend. Harold explains that the house has been a very happy place for him, and he hopes it will be for them too. Just then, the phone rings, and Harold says that it was security at Lassiter’s – the store alarm has gone off. They leave to check it out, with Harold smiling knowingly.

At the store, Harold lets himself in and sees something move, so he calls out for Marco, who doesn’t appear. Harold calls out, asking who’s there, when the lights come on and everyone jumps out and yells ‘Surprise!’. Mickey and Ben rush over to hug Harold, while Lou stands in the background watching, before winking at Mickey and sneaking away. Harold suspects that Lou playing a party in organising the surprise and asks where he is – Mickey tells him that he just left.

..

Later, the teens are all sitting together and Taylah is still talking about Ty, prompting Rachel to stand up and walk away. Meanwhile, various others are gathered around another table, looking at the map that Mickey and Ben helped to make, in order to track Harold’s progress around the country. Harold is delighted with it, and Frazer takes the boys to go and put it up on the wall. Elsewhere, Carmella and Marco are arguing with Oliver about her plans to go to Italy. Valda says that she’s going to the bar to try and drag Steph back with her, and Carmella and Marco decide to join her.

..

At the bar, Valda tells Steph she’s working too hard and missing out on Harold’s leaving party. Steph points out that it’s Valda’s leaving party too, and they share a hug. Steph tells Valda how much she’s going to miss her, and promises to try and pop over to the party later. At one of the table, Carmella says that she needs to get away, as all the fighting is starting to affect Chloe.

At the store, Rachel is unimpressed to see Ty arrive, while Mickey says his goodbyes to Harold, who thanks him for coming and is sorry that Ned had to work. Mickey asks to put up a Neighbour Day poster, as Harold was such a great neighbour, and tells him not to be mad at Lou, as he wanted to stay, but was just too sad.

..

At the bar the next morning, Carmella and Marco have met with Oliver to discuss things. He apologises for overreacting, but he’s just scared of losing Chloe, and Marco apologises for making the situation worse at times. Oliver agrees that he’s been provoking Marco too, and offers to go to the police station and have the assault charges dropped. Just as they think everything’s going to be fine, Marco and Carmella are shocked as Oliver mentions that they still have the custody case to get through. They look worried, then realise that they have somewhere to be…

..

Lou is sitting outside his caravan, when he’s joined for a cuppa by Harold. Lou apologises for not getting back to the party, blaming paperwork, and Harold asks how Tazzle is settling in. Lou says that she’s settling in well. Neither of them says anything, until Lou wonders if he should be telling Harold how much he’ll miss him. Harold points out that Lou won’t have anyone to fight with, though Lou insists he’ll find someone – “Ramsay Street won’t be the same without you, Jelly Belly.”

..

..

..

..

A little later, everyone claps as Harold walks down the driveway of number 24 for the last time. He and Valda stand by the van, and he hands over the house keys to Marco and Carmella. Lou then hands a letter to Harold, telling him not to read it until he’s crossed the border. Lou and Harold hug, and he tells Valda to have a safe trip. She doesn’t seem impressed, and goes to get in the van. Harold gets in the other side, and a small brass band starts playing as they drive away, with all the neighbours, except a solemn Lou, lined up down the street, waving and cheering. Harold stops the van and leans out to wave, before driving out of Ramsay Street.
