When young Callum Jones won a trip on a cruise after completing a scavenger hunt, he gave his prize to his adopted dad Toadie and girlfriend Sonya. As Toadie and Sonya waited in Sydney to board the ship, Sonya was surprised to bump into her old flame Eli Baker, who was also on the cruise in his role as a travel writer. Toadie quickly got annoyed by Eli's confident ways and the ease with which he and Sonya chatted about old times, and things got competitive when Eli later passed Sonya and Toadie as he was out for a run. During dinner that evening, Toadie, hearing that karaoke was on offer on the ship the next day, suggested a singing contest, but was soon put out when he heard Eli's efforts and realised what a great singer he was too. But it was Toadie's out-of-tune but full-of-enthusiasm effort that impressed everyone on the ship. Later, when Toadie got a call from home and told Sonya that he'd have to leave at the next port to help out his friend Steph, Sonya insisted on leaving with him rather than stick around with Eli. Toadie was surprised, but Sonya explained that, although Eli was a great writer, singer and athlete, he was also self-absorbed and their relationship had only lasted a few months.
