After having his grand wedding at Lassiter’s, Erinsborough Hospital lab technician John Coward struggled to settle the debt, due to a gambling problem, so hotel owner Paul Robinson agreed to wipe the debt and offered another $200 if John could fix some test results for him, to pretend that his daughter Elle had a terminal illness. John agreed, and, the following year, Elle returned to him for another favour, though this time with slightly nicer motives. Her boyfriend, Oliver Barnes, had recently learnt that family friend Alan Napier might actually be his grandfather and Elle believed that he needed to know the truth. So, with no consent forms, she went to John with a hair from Oliver and Alan and paid him to do the tests on the quiet, which proved that Oliver was indeed Alan’s grandson.
