When lead man Ned Parker pulled out of the local musical production of The Pirates of Penzance at the last minute, he was replaced with local doctor, and aspiring musician, Karl Kennedy. After the show, Karl was approached in Scarlet Bar by Kirsten Dickie and her friends, who were all very impressed with his performance. He bought them all drinks and played one of his own songs, The River of the Soul but later, he learnt that Kirsten and her friends had been paid by Elle Robinson to shower the leading man with attention and build up his confidence – the leading man that was supposed to have been Ned.
